Pathetic bunch of losers!

Soccer fans march to French embassy
SASJKIA OTTOAbout 200 soccer fans marched to the French embassy in Dublin today to call for a rematch of Ireland’s disputed World Cup playoff against France.

About 100 protesters started marching from Landsdowne Road at 2pm and this doubled by the time they reached the French embassy.

Organisers made speeches on loudspeakers to ask French diplomats to intervene and organise a replay. The crowd responded with chants of “fair play is replay” and “you’ll never cheat the Irish”.

About 20 French people attended the protest. Lucile de Saint-Michel, who lives in Portobello, Dublin, said “I’m very shocked the Irish got cheated out of a victory. The Irish played better than the French in Paris. It wasn’t a pretty game.”

However, French support for Thierry Henri, who admitted to a handball, remained high. It’s so sad it should happen to him. He is Mr Nice Guy. It’s the ref’s fault and it’s up to Fifa to put it right,” Ms de Saint-Michel said.

However, anti-Henri sentiments predominated among the Irish, who chanted "same old Henri, always cheating".

Tony Barry from Dublin City Centre said he was disappointed with the turnout. “About 300,000 people joined a Facebook group to support us. I was expecting thousands to be here. I don’t know why so few have turned up but I think it could be the weather,” he said.

Kev Storrs promoted the protest on social networking site Facebook. More than 1,000 people said they would attend.

The protest was pretty poorly organised. I only heard about it the evening before, not much notice.

Ireland fan: Charlize Theron nearly sent FIFA officials into meltdown when she pretended to pick Ireland as the first team for the World Cup draw

Hollywood star Charlize Theron has endeared herself to the entire Irish nation after selecting Ireland in the draw for the World Cup.

Shocked FIFA observers nearly fell over themselves when Theron plucked an "Ireland" ball out of the bowl in the dress rehearsal for Friday's draw.

"Ireland," she announced as FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke went pale in the face.

Theron, who is a big supporter of the Irish team, is no stranger to making her opinions heard.

She is refusing to marry long-time Irish boyfriend Stuart Townsend until gay marriage is legal.

Ireland of course were knocked out by France after a much disputed handball by Thierry Henry.

Now FIFA officials are concerned that she might repeat the stunt on Friday when she co-hosts the draw with Valcke.

Absolutely right. It would have been a complete sham if they'd banned him because of their own messing around.

Why should he? The ref didn't catch it, that's where it should have ended. Should Robbie Keane be sanctioned for the several handballs he had in that game?

No, on mature reflection you are right.
Cheats should be allowed to do whatever they like. And UEFA/FIFA should be commended for destroying the 'Beautiful' game.

What do you propose in this case? A replay? Is this to happen every time such an incident occurs? Which games should be included - just internationals? European competitions? Domestic leagues? What are the parameters? Does it only cover incidents where a goal is scored? How about incorrect offside calls?

It was up to the ref to catch it. Henry claims he told the ref it was a handball, I don't buy that myself. If a video ref is introduced on the back of this, fair enough but to suggest Henry should have been suspended for some of the WC is laughable.

It depends on whether you have faith in the honesty of the game. To most fans it was clear from the disgraceful late introduction of seeding that there were other forces at work. There were good reasons to suspect that something like this would happen, were it necessary to give France further aid. Players can become aware of those same forces at work, you know that the ref is looking for an excuse to award a penalty against you so it becomes harder to defend. Attacking players become more likely to try and cheat if they suspect that they will get away with it. Watching the game, I could actually seeing that happen.

Anelka dived knowing that the consequences of getting caught (he wasn't punished anyway) would be totally minor in comparison to the gains. Henry handled the ball deep into injury time for exactly the same reason and knowing that the referee would be under tremendous pressure not to deny France in a marginal decision. If he had denied France in the wrong, he would have been finished. It wasn't a level playing field.

FIFA are obviously not going to accept that sort of reasoning, for various reasons. But they still were in a position to charge Henry for "bringing the game into disrepute", a broad (deliberately vague) charge that had been used earlier in the season to ban Eduardo for a dive. That he was later cleared when he argued successfully that the video evidence was inconclusive was beside the point, the fact is that the legal reasons stated as to why Henry couldn't be banned were fundamentally untrue and if the situation was reversed you can be assured that one of our players would have been charged. They're pretending to be bothered by the fact that they couldn't punish Henry for cheating with one hand when in fact they are rewarding him with the other hand.

This conspiracy theory stuff is nonsense...you mention anelka's dive...it was by no means a clear-cut decision and the ref could easily have given it.

Laughable? Pray tell.....

Maybe if FIFA/UEFA grasped the fact that the fans are becoming disillusioned with the game and actually take a stand against cheating, promoted 'Fair Play' instead of paying lip service to it and BAN THE CHEATING C***S, such as Henry, Ronaldo etc. Then we wouldn't have situations whereby a Nation is 'robbed' of a chance to attend one of the biggest Sporting Events in the world.
It's only laughable to you because you don't have intelligence to realise that the resulting outcome and aftermath of Henry's handball is in fact ..'Laughable'. Put a Devil on Horseback and he'll most certainly ride to Hell
Video refs should have been introduced years ago. It's 'laughable' to think we'll still be shaking our heads at incompetent refs and wrong decisions for many years to come.
