That is so bad about the Ward result. Really is terrible that one of the best young talents in world boxing and to be shafted like that is a joke.Its's amazing to think though that head honcho's in the IABA thought and wanted Egan to win in the Irish title to have crack off these qualifiers ahead of a talent like Ward. Will be intersesting to see what he will do now. I know that he was looking for more money in terms of grants but not sure he will get them now and that was a big issue before christmas. Still young enough to wait 4 years and go pro after Brazil in 2016 but wouldn't surprise me if he got big offer now and went pro now

So far today Davey Joyce was beaten but Adam Nolan won so he's one win away from London. His semi final is on Friday.

The big news though is that Paddy Barnes beat Caslarov of Romania 17-9 to become the 4th Irish boxer going to London 2012.

Prior to this last European qualifying tournament in Turkey Turkey had no boxers qualified for the Olympics.

With all weights at semi final stage they have 8 of their 10 boxers still involved. (To put it another way, 10 weights at semi final stage means 40 boxers still involved, 8 of which are Turks). Not all of those boxers are qualified yet of course. Only in three weights are boxers actually qualified so far and only two Turks have qualified. The medalists and favourites the Turks have left in their wake make for an impressive list. The natural conclusion is that the Turks, eager to impress on home soil, have been training harder than usual.

On Friday Adam Nolan will be facing Romanian Ionut Gheorghe, a bronze medallist at the Athens Olympics. The winner goes to the Olympics. Paddy Barnes will face Turk Ferhat Pehlivan and Tommy McCarthy will face Moldova's Vladimir Cheles, one of only two fighters to actually defeat a Turk in this tournament. McCarthy has to win the gold to qualify.

Analysis of Joe Ward's last round shows that he landed 12 punches but scored 4 points while the Turk landed 4 punches, scoring 6 points.

The lack of reaction to this (even on a rugby forum) says it all regarding to the public's mistrust of the sport. Galling that whilst an "amatuer" event, a lot of time and money (public or lotto granted I think) goes into the preparation of these athletes/events!

I've seen comments from British boxers and commentators as well as boxers from other nations questioning the outcome of the Ward Muzaffer fight but it's over with now and not the only questionable result at the tournament.

That said, Ward is back in training in the hopes of a Wild Card spot. It's a long shot and it's a drawn out process but there is a wild card spot for a European boxer in his weight class and, depending on interpretation of the Wild Card qualifying rules, he qualifies for it.

I wasn't disagreeing with you, just highlighting that neutrals have questioned it so it wasn't just a case of Irish sour grapes.

The wild card is supposed to go to athletes from countries that wouldn't normally participate in that sport. Ireland had a gymnast invited to, I think, Atlanta and there were a couple of swimmers invited to Sydney or Athens who had never been in a 50m pool before. If there are no European countries with boxers that match that criteria then it can go to the highest ranked boxer from another European country and that would be Ward. It's a big if though.

Adam Nolan has joined the Irish team heading to London. Adam did not train with the Elite High Performance team but instead worked full time in the lead up to this tournament training out of the Bray gym with Peter Taylor, Katie's dad. The tournament in Turkey was his first major international competition.

Katie Taylor has a bye. The draw has been excellent for her as she cannot face Underwood (USA), Jones (ENG), Ochigava (RUS), Dong (CHI) or Tatar (TUR) before the final.

Over the weekend Ceire Smith beat Svetlana (ref stopped the fight in the 3rd round after a standing count in the 1st and 2nd) and then beat Sarah Joy Rae of Jamaica 12-4. She fights Karolina Michalaczuk of Poland in the last 16 tomorrow. Michalaczuk is the 4th seed.

Sinead Kavanagh was beaten 23-19 by Carmona Paez.

Katie Taylor won her opening fight against Rim Jouini of Tunisia this morning with a 19-6 score. She next fights Saida Khassenova of Kazakstan in the last 16 tomorrow morning.

Katie's main rivals are all still in the competition. In the last 16 the 3rd seed Cheng Dong of China fights Sofya Ochigava of Russia while England's Tasha Jonas fights Laishram Sarita Devi who beat the 2nd seed Gulsum Tatar of Turkey. USA of America's Queen Underwood is up against Norway's Ingrid Egner with the winner of that set to face the winner of Jonas Sarita Devi.

I've not seen anyone questioning the judging at all so far. In fact reports are that it's all fair and above board which is great to see.

USA of America's Queen Underwood was beaten by Egner so she's relying on an invite to London.

So far, due to continental quotas, Mavzuna Chorieva (TJK), Adriana Arajuo (BRA), Rim Jouini (TUN) and Alexis Pritchard (NZL) have all qualified in Katie's weight for London 2012.

There are still 3 European qualification spots up for grabs. The 2nd Asian spot will probably go to either Khassenova or Dong depending on how Katie and Ochigava get on.

There are also spaces for 1 wildcard spot from each of Africa, America, Asia and Europe. It's likely the American spot will go to Underwood and the Asian one to whichever of Khassenova and Dong miss out. For Europe there are 5 Europeans still competing with only 4 spots, including the wildcard, available.

Mihaela Lacatus withdrew with a neck injury meaning a walkover for Katie and Chorieva beat Mossley of France 20-12 meaning Katie qualifies for London 2012 as do Sofya Ochigava and Natasha Jonas who are probably the top three Europeans at this weight anyway so that worked out well.

The line up for Friday morning's semi finals is:
Katie Taylor (IRL) V Mavzuna Chorieva (TJK)
Sofya Ochigava (RUS) V Natasha Jonas (ENG)

Katie's qualification means the IABA's target of 5 men and 1 woman boxing in the Olympics has been met which is not bad going at all.

Katie wins 16-6 to make the final.

Sofya Ochigava beat Englands Natsha Jonas to set up a repeat of the European championship final (which Katie won 10-5) live on RTÉ2 tomorrow morning from 8.

I believe that if Katie wins Saida Khassenova goes to London but if Sofya wins then Cheng Dong goes.
