Lost another boxer yesterday (George Bates lost out on a count back) leaving 8 in the Quarter Finals and just one fight away from a medal. Unfortunately the first of those 8, Evan Metcalfe, has been beaten.

Stephen Broadhurst (75Kg), Jack Morrissey (91Kg), Joe Fitzpatrick (52Kg), Michael O'Reilly (69Kg) and Gary Sweeney (81Kg) are all guaranteed medals irrespective of the results of today's semi finals. That's medals for 50% of the Irish team which is a great result in itself.

Following today's semis there are two Irish boxers still standing.

Michael O'Reilly, who went to the High Court to be considered for this competition, will fight Russian Igor Kharitonov and Gary Sweeney will fight Russian Vladimir Krusonov. The finals take place on Sunday.

There's a lot of quality in this Russian team as is evidenced by the fact that the 60Kg final is the only final that doesn't feature a Russian. Also worth noting is that O'Reilly and Sweeney are the only non Eastern Europeans in the finals.

Both of Ireland's boxers had to settle for Silver as the Russians powered home to pick up 6 golds and 3 silvers. Hate to be the tenth team boxer on that flight.

Ireland with 2 silver and 3 bronze finished in third place behind Azerbaijan with 2 gold, 1 silver & 1 bronze.

Ray Moylette, the current European champion, and Ross Hickey, the current Irish Elite champion, will meet in a box-off at the National Stadium tonight to decide the light-welterweight (64Kg) position on the Irish team for the upcoming AIBA World Championships and Olympic qualifiers in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Ahead of those championships a number of Irish boxers are ranked in the top ten in their divisions. Joe Ward has been ranked 2nd in the World at light-heavyweight (81Kg), John Joe Nevin has been ranked 4th at bantamweight (56Kg), Ray Moylette is 6th at light-welterweight (64Kg), Paddy Barnes is 8th at light-flyweight (49Kg) and Darren O'Neill is 9th at middleweight (75Kg).

The World Championships start on September 26th.

Olympic qualification can be secured by making the quarter finals of the World Championships or being beaten by either finalist in the last 16.

This is true for all weights except heavyweight (91Kg) and super heavyweight (91Kg+) where only those making the semi finals and the boxers beaten by both finalists in the quarter finals will qualify.

I don't think so. I believe there's a bit of a dispute about the outcome with some surprise greeting the judges decisions. 3 judges gave it to Hickey 21-11, 11-8 and 23-21 while two gave it to Moylette 21-11 and 16-14 according to the Star. I'm not sure how they calculate the winner based on that but there you go.

Ah the cheap shot. Where would boxing be without it?

Since I started this thread there's been a few beauties. Abner Mares famously threw 5 or 6 low blows per round in his Bantamweight title fight with Joseph Agbeko in what has to go down as one of the worst displays of officiating ever. Mares was declared the winner but a rematch has been ordered.

Mayo man Henry Coyle won his title fight after Elio Cotena was unable to continue due to a cut sustained in a clash of heads. Of course these things happen but also these things are made to happen, just as elbows follow fists.

Saturday night was a real beauty though with the fight decided by two cheap shots in a matter of seconds. Floyd Mayweather Junior and Victor Ortiz were deep in the 4th round when Ortiz connected with a lovely hook, backed Mayweather into the corner threw a few punches and then, in a moment of madness, launched a ridiculous headbutt. The ref broke them up, Ortiz hugged Mayweather in apology (and looked to be trying to kiss him) the ref took him around the ring to the judges to have a point deducted while Ortiz touched gloves with Mayweather in apology again. The ref then took the fighters back to the centre of the ring and said "lets go". Ortiz reached forward and hugged Mayweather again and, as the fighers broke apart, Mayweather responded with a left hook which shook Ortiz wholooked to the ref, presumably because he still had his hands down when Mayweather hit him. Seizing the advantage Mayweather threw a straight right and Ortiz was out. The fun then continued in the post match interview where, after being asked if it was a cheap shot Mayweather called on HBO to fire their commentator, Larry Merchant, claiming he never gives Floyd a fair shake and doesn't "know sht about boxing" Merchant responded by saying he wished he was 50 years younger as he'd kick Floyd's ass.

Anyway, was it a cheap shot? Definitely. He could see that Ortiz wasn't ready but at the same time Ortiz was an idiot. What was he doing trying to hug Floyd? The ref had restarted the clock and the fight and Ortiz left himself wide open for the sucker punch. Always protect yourself, keep your hands up and apologise to the other guy after you beat him.

BBC had an investigation into claims that money has changed hands to ensure Azerbaijani golds so thankfully no Irish boxers are facing Azerbaijani opponents yet.

So Michael Conlon will kick off the Irish quest for World medals and Olympic qualification against Moldovan Alexandr Riscan. Conlon and Ricsan sparred together in a training camp in Cologne within the last fortnight so they know each other well and Irish coach Billy Walsh is confident that Conlon can come through.

For those of you with Sky (or Sky based free to air or Freeview) Frank Warren was talking to Steve Bunce on BBC London last Thursday about the launch of his new Boxing channel, Box Nation (Sky 456), which launches fully this Friday and mentioned that they will have the Quarter finals, semi finals and finals live. (Coverage starts October 5th @ noon.) The channel will be free for a couple of months which means it will, presumably, be free for the October 15th WBC World Light-Heavyweight Title bout between Bernard Hopkins and Chad Dawson.

Have heard about Carl Heild from somewhere and cant quite place where/what I heard! rated 5th Welterweight in the Americas cant be too bad though.

He was also a bronze medallist at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Roy was 2007 European Champion but lost out to John Joe Joyce for the 2008 Olympics. He beat JJJ in the quarter finals of the Elite box offs this time round.

Ray Moylette seems to need a big reason to put in a very offensive round, is this a stamina tactic?
