Conlan (52Kg), Joyce (60Kg), R Sheehan (69Kg), O'Neill (75Kg) and Ward (81Kg) are all through to the last 16 and one fight away from Olympic qualification.

Nevin (56Kg) and Egan (91Kg) have their last 32 fights this afternoon (Nevin around 5 and Egan 5.45). A win will put Nevin one fight away from London 2012 but Egan's weight class means he'll need to make the last 8 to qualify.

Paddy Barnes (49kg) lost out 12-20 this morning and Ray Moylette (64Kg) lost 7-19 yesterday, both in the last 32. Their Olympic qualification hopes now have to wait until Istanbul in April.

John Joe Nevin has won his fight 21-14 so he's into the last 16 as well.

Just Egan to go and he's up against Cuban fighter Jose Larduet Gomez in about half an hour.

Egan was 23-11 down at the end of the 2nd round and retired in the 3rd.

I missed Con Sheehan (91Kg+) in the earlier round up. He's through to the last 16 as well so 7/10 through with 6 of those just one win away from Olympic qualification.

Dont think Egan has the stamina to carry the additional weight! Sad to see, am I right to say there is still a qualification possibility for these guys through other competitions?

Yes. There are a limited number of places per continent. Whatever European places are left will be fought for in Istanbul next April. Haven't looked into it in detail yet but I think there are only 6 Europeans in the final 16 of Paddy Barnes weight division and some of them fight each other so there won't be many European qualification places taken there.

There are a total of 78 European places available for London 2012.

2 are already gone with Italy and the Ukraine picking up spots through the World Series of Boxing Individual championships. (3 if Kazakhstan is part of Europe in the eyes of the Olympics.) The host country also gets 13 spots leaving 63 (62?) spots available.

5 Europeans qualified for the last 8 at 64Kg. In Paddy Barnes class (49Kg) only 2 Europeans are in the last 8. There is a possibilty of more Europeans picking up spots depending on who the finalists beat in the last 16 round.

Joe Ward (81Kg) has just lost his last 16 fight on a count back. If Iran's Ehsan Rouzbahani makes the final Joe will still qualify.

In my mind the target was 5 qualified (including the women) so still on target. It could have been for 3 medals too but I'd have to find the interview. Interview with Kenny Egan shown on RTE news was telling (the cuban was "easy enough to hit" but was just "too strong"). Going up a weight category is massively difficult.

Thanks for all the updates BW BTW

Edit: I was wrong - it was 5 over the whole year, with 3 here and 1 medal so going great!

"Yeah, it’s a good team, a very good team,” said Walsh. “We’ve five ranked in the top 10 in the world and another two just outside it as well as Katie Taylor, who has been the number one in the world for the last five years.”

“We set a target at the beginning of the year that we qualify five boxers over this Olympic process and that at the World Championships we qualify three,” added Walsh.

“That’s three in the top eight and one medal. I’d be very, very happy to exceed that and there’s every possibility to exceed that
...a beautiful weighted pass...it is 3 on 2...it is 3 on 1...Hickie!...Magnificent!

Despite getting a standing 8 count in the first and second rounds John Joe Nevin battled back from 13-11 down to win his fight on a countback and qualify for his second Olympics in a row. Hopefully he'll get a medal this time.

He'll face Shaymov of Uzbekistan in the last 8.

That's 2 qualified with 4 still to fight.

For those with access to it BoxNation (Sky ch. 456) will be showing the quarter finals live starting tomorrow at 15.30.

Just listened to John Joe's post fight interview. Shaymov came back from 3-0 down going into the last round to beat JJ in a previous competition but JJ was suffering from a flu at the time so he's looking forward to setting the record straight tomorrow.

Darren O'Neill's Japanese opponent stopped the World Champion and has a bit of a buzz about him in the competition a tough fight is expected.

Roy Sheehan lost 11-7.

Michael Conlan faces European champion Selby from Wales for a medal tomorrow.

Team GB have three teams in Baku - England, Scotland and Wales - giving them three attempts at each weight class for London.

According to Paul McDermott (@pmcdisc) who's in Baku if Ward and Joyce had each other's refs they'd both have gone through (if you know what I mean). If I remember correctly from the post fight interview Ward said the judges were 4-1 in his favour but he still lost the countback. That said, what would an amateur boxing tournament be without one or two, shall we say "questionable", decisions.

John Joe Nevin is 1st up for the Irish this morning with his bout around 11. Two fights later Darren O'Neill takes to the ring. Michael Conlan fights this afternoon.

Fights are live on BoxNation and AIBA.org. RTÉ2 will be showing the Irish fights today at 5.

For those who missed out this time round the focus shifts to Istanbul. Egan and Sheehan both went up weight classes for the selection tournament for these games. With none of Ward, Egan or Sheehan qualified the door could be open for Egan to drop back to 81Kg and fight Ward for the spot on the team going to Istanbul. That would allow Sheehan drop back under 91Kg. Of course nothing is straight forward with the IABA.

In terms of places left for London, Europe gets 78 spots across 10 weight categories. That's 8 in 8 and 7 in 2. Looking the weight categories that Ireland have yet to qualify in Europe has secured 2 at both 49Kg and 60Kg, 4 at 64Kg and 81Kg and 6 at 69Kg. At all of therse weights there are possibilities of other European boxers qualifying if they lost to the finalists at the last 16 stage. For Ireland that would mean David Oliver Joyce, Roy Sheehan and Joe Ward qualifying if Bhagwan, Kavaliauskas or Rouzbahani make their finals.

91Kg and 91Kg+ are yet to be determined but there are 6 Europeans in the final 8 at 91Kg and 7 at 91Kg+. Also the Italians have already secured a spot at 91Kg through the WSB.

JJ Nevin has beaten Shaymov and is guaranteed at least a bronze medal!

He trailed 7-4 after the first, came back to 11-9 in the second and finished 19-17 ahead. Great comeback again.

Darren O'Neill is due in the ring in about half an hour.

Conlan lost 25-24.

Also beaten were Bhagwan and Rouzbahani. Kavaliauskas is up next carrying the last hopes of any non-qualified Irish boxer.

As far as this competition goes JJ Nevin is Ireland's last boxer. He'll be in the semi finals tomorrow.

The Irish fights on RTÉ2 later will be worth a look. All cracking bouts according to the twitter commentators.
