Agree there's a lack of extreme pace at the back, but the goal from Wednesday night was just unfortunate. The back four were trying to play off-side, Riise got caught out and nobody tracked the runner from midfield.
As for yesterday, i was just disappointed with Finnan. Finnan should have seen that Agger was caught with two men to mark. Agger stepped up to challenge Kalou and Shev peeled away. Finnan should have been much closer to his centre back in the first place and it was sublime control by Shevy anyway.

We signed a fair few players for the back in the last 6 months. It'll take a little time for them all to settle.

Well I think Rafa's plan is for Agger to get a lot more game time this season and gradually take over from Sami.
I missed the game (apart from the last fifteen minutes) how did Zenden get on in the middle of the park?

It was speed of thought rather than speed of foot that did us for Sheva's goal (lovely finish btw). Finnan really should have been around on the cover.

How good were Momo and Zenden in the middle? They dealt easily with Ballack, Lamps and Essien, and that really set the tempo for what was an excellent first half.

The second half was disrupted by the substitutions, so it's much harder to draw conclusions from that. Nice to get the winner though.

I'm certainly happier now than I was last Wednesday.

I can't believe how aggressive Zenden was, i always thought he was a bit of a girl.
Momo was simply outstanding - if he can improve his shooting then he will really take over from Viera, but he needs to start weighing in with about 10 goals a season.
Xavi looks a little of colour to be honest. I'd look at playing Gerrard and Momo in the middle and stick with Crouchy and Bellamy up front.

Yep, and if exercised properly the offside trap can be very useful and good at infuriating tempermental strikers. Arsenal made a team around it!

Really?

Well maybe that's Zenden's best position then cause he never does a tap on the wing. I seem to remember he played quite a bit in the centre in his last season with Boro.
Momo's work-rate and athleticism is exceptional alright. He's nearly making himself undropable which will mean a difficult choice between Gerrard and Alonso if Rafa wants to play 4-4-2 with two natural wingers.

Xabi was poor yesterday too. Interestingly, when the changes were made, Alonso came in for Zenden and Gerrard came in for Pennent and operated in that right-sided position. I think (hope!) he'll see a fair bit of service out there this year.

It will now be staged in Kiev on Tuesday, August 22.

No surprise in Kiev, suppose it is far enough East to satisfy Israelis I know Liverpool were pushing for Rotterdam, which is a bit cheeky.

Puts paid to ITV's "exclusive" that the match was going to be in Cyprus!!

If Chelsea play like they did Saturday, they'll lose more than the Charity Shield this season....

And I know who I'd prefer out of Sissoko and Ballack...

And I'd say the 21 year old Mo-mo is costing us a damn sight less than £121,000 a month the 30 year old Ballack is costing Chelsea over the next four years.

Even if we only finish top four this season, it's great to think Chelsea pour out three or four times our expenditure to play like that...

Ireland U21 international snapped up by Mick.

Liverpool midfielder Darren Potter has undergone a medical ahead of a season-long loan switch to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Republic of Ireland youth international, who spent a spell with Southampton in The Championship last season, has taken the necessary tests at Molineux and is likely to seal his switch in the coming days.

Potter featured in The Reds' UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign at the start of last season but was unable to break into Rafa Benitez's Premiership plans.

After first catching Wolves boss Mick McCarthy's eye during his time at St Mary's, Potter is now on the brink of joining the former Sunderland boss at his new club.

"Darren is here and he's having his scans," McCarthy told the club's official website.

"He's a talented player and we're hoping to wrap things up on his loan pretty soon.

"I watched him last year when he was playing for Southampton and he impressed me.

"He did excellently. He's a modern-day central midfielder, he is young and hungry and we are happy to see him here at Wolves."

Liverpool are believed to be close to clinching the signing of Dutch international Dirk Kuyt.

Reports emanating from Holland claim Liverpool have won the race for the Feyenoord striker.

The Reds are believed to have beaten Newcastle to the punch for Kuyt even though Magpies boss Glenn Roeder was in Dublin on Wednesday to watch the payer in action for Holland.

Kuyt's future has been the subject of intense speculation all summer with a number of top clubs across Europe expressing an interest in signing him.

Liverpool are reported to have agreed a fee with Feyenoord for Kuyt and the Dutch club have given them permission to open talks with the prolific forward.

Kuyt is expected to arrive on Merseyside on Thursday to open talks and undergo a medical.

The former Utrecht man has hinted that he is close to sealing a move with Liverpool his preferred destination.

"There are a few clubs interested - but only one is my dream club," Kuyt told Sky Sports News.

"I don't want to say anything about that - but I think we can say more in a few days."

Liverpool could offer Dutch defender Jan Kromkamp as a makeweight in the deal with the player seemingly surplus to requirements to Anfield.

The FA Cup holders could also help fund the deal by selling Florent Sinama Pongolle to Lyon.

Lyon boss Gerard Houllier is a big fan of Pongolle having signed him when he was in charge of Liverpool and is considering bringing him back to France
