Have rail tickets booked Birmingham -Cardiff aswell but they are with CrossCountry trains...so may be ok as it's a different operator to the one affected here.

EDIT: have checked Cross Countrys website and there are no issues.

See the above - depends on who your rail tickets for Birmingham to Cardiff are with (as not all operators are affected). Ours are with Cross Country trains - no issues there.
