Loughman must be playing very well at tighthead to keep Heffernan at bay. According to some Terenure guys, he is playing very good high-tempo rugby in a rejunvenated Terenure pack in the AIL. A bit old-school as a prop in that he doesn't hit the front at training but is a big match-day contributor. They've seen off Con, Garryowen and Mary's thus far and you can't do that without big contributions from your tight-head.

Good to hear Heffernan is playing well, as reports on him in previous seasons weren't great.

As said numerous times over the years Heffernan is not pro material good AIL player who may mature as he gets older but would be suprised if he was kept on by Leinster next season

Looking at the academy the following players are in their final year:

Jeremy Loughman(Prop/UCD/22) - has experience of playing loosehead and tighthead prop at AIL level/ Primarily playing playing tighthead in recent years, was leap frogged by Andrew Porter. Would expect him to get a development deal.

Oisin Heffernan(TH Prop/Terenure/22) - strictly a tighthead prop, has struggled somewhat in the AIL and hasn't cemented a place in A side. Wouldn't be a surprise if he wasnt offered a development deal with two players younger than him ahead of him in the pecking order and another closing in on him.

Sean McNulty(Hooker/UCD/22) - the former munster underage player is captaining UCD this season. Hasn't pushed Bryan Byrne for his place in the A team and has yet to make a senior appearance. I'd expect him to get a development deal due to lack of depth at hooker but needs a big season to suggest he has a long leinster career ahead of him.

Josh Murphy(Backrow/Lock/UCD/22) - the blindside flanker is a good player who does all the basics well, but given the depth in the backrow at leinster he would struggle to get gametime. Played 2nd row at the weekend for the A team and looks noticeably bulkier this season. Could see him getting a development deal to see if he has a long term future at 2nd row.

Charlie Rock(Scrumhalf/Lansdowne/22) - the diminutive scrumhalf moved to Lansdowne this season from Old Belvedere. Likely will get a development deal due to lack of depth in the position, although he could be under pressure if new academy scrumhalf Hugh O'Sullivan continues his quick progression through the academy.

Ian Fitzpatrick(Wing/Lansdowne/23) - the oft injured winger, has managed to avoid injury so far this season while also playing 7's for Ireland. Needs a big season to get a development deal with younger wingers in the academy pushing for the same.

Thought this was an interesting comparison of the size of Dowling, Murphy and Molony.

Image

Often the biggest worry about Molony is his relative lack of size, listed at 6'6 111kg, well he looks notably bigger than both Dowling & Murphy in this picture, both who are listed at 6'5 105kg.

Now it could be the angle but thought it was interesting.

Yeah being brutally honest I wasn't impressed by Dowling at u-20 last year and don't think he'll make it. We're just pretty desperate for second rows.

Dont think they were desperate for 2nd rows last season, but agree that Dowling is unlikely to make it at the top level, mostly due to his physical limitations.

The angles can be deceiving sometimes and players might not be standing up straight.

I'd agree though that Dowling is another small second row that doesn't stand out physically. It's worth bringing him into the academy because he might surprise.
