Think Swift is retiring becuase he banjaxed his knee.

Big loss. Him never getting loads of test caps was a huge plus for Leinster. Will be missed. Thanks Jenno!

My favourite current Leinster player. Whilst sad to see him go it's always good when a player can retire on their own terms. Massive hole to fill next year.

Just like to add my best wishes to Jenno, think both he and Leo left the Tigers a bit too soon, but thanks for your great play whilst with us.

Interestingly he was saying on Second Captains that he was in negotiations on a contract extension when he realised the time was right to retire.

other interesting part was he said he hadnt done any weights on his upper body for a couple of years due to niggles and shoulder problems

Oh yeah! Wished they'd talked about that further, I hate doing weights so wouldn't mind knowing what his secret is.

diet the big one but his upper body would still be getting worked out to some extent playing/training and maybe he was just doing bodyweight stuff but he definitely wouldnt have been able to put on weight

it would be amazing if he wasnt doing maintenance workouts at all or even specialised pre season workouts (after body had rest period) to put it back on eg GVT which is ten sets of ten reps and is lowest weight weight training you could do to put on mass

The secret is to learn to love doing weights. :D

Don't piffle about with complicated lifts, you only need the big 4 compound lifts:
Squat
Deadlift
Bench Press
Shoulder Press

Lift low reps, and build up to lifting heavy

3x45 sessions per week will do you.

Look for a decent free 5x5 program online, follow it and with a decent diet in 6 to 8 months your base power, sprint performance, cardio endurance (and your reflection) will have vastly improved.

I'd agree with most of that. I don't agree with doing just low reps and building the weight... I think alternating between high reps with lower weight and low reps with bigger weight is a good combo (for me anyway). I find that if I stay on the heavier weights every week that I do start to get niggles (especially in my shoulders) but I've just hit the 40 so that could be age

The diet is massive though. I'd say 80% of your body shape is down to diet.

Yup,

I think people tend to "hate weights" out of tedium, I find that low reps with high intensity keep it interesting.

Hitting 40 this year myself, I tend to stick to low reps heavy lifts 5x5s for about 3 months, then I drop the weight by about 30% and do about 4 weeks of a 10x10, then back onto the 5x5s.

For 5x5 I use Medhi.
For 10x10 I use Poloquin.

Oh I do weights and am in decent shape, I just find them really boring and would much rather be out in the fresh air. My hatred actually helps with the intensity because I just want to get them over with ASAP.

Same with when I go for a run, I tend to wait until just before there's something I want to do e.g. On Sunday ill probably go just before the Ireland game so that I force myself to work hard and get back in time for it instead of taking it easy.

Take that, GVT!

I just head to the gym to pick up really heavy weights, grunt, drop them on the floor and then take a few selfies.
Few sets of that and I'm good.

Supposed to have been up and running already but the date keeps getting pushed back. From what I hear, not having to budget for any ITV network programmes has freed up enough cash, and it'll be up during the summer

According to http://www.tv3.ie/rwc2015_article/12/TV ... p-coverage
TV3 has also confirmed TV3HD will arrive in August on both Sky and UPC in time for the Rugby World Cup.

problem with 3 x 3 or 5 x 5 which is what the players do mid season for maintenance is thats whats going to be too hard for someone eg Jennings to do if theyve problems with supporting muscles or joints eg shoulder in his case
(need chinups/pullups in there too)

would be interested to know what rep range they do pre season, guessing 6-8

Oh I would imagine they would have a far more sophisticated weights protocol than 5x5 or 3x3, probably some kind of undulating periodisation.

Prob start off at 60% - 70% for 3 sets of 8 - 12 and build up the intensity and drop the rep ranges down to maybe 4 sets of 4 - 6 over 4 weeks and repeat. Those guys prob training too long for linear progression to work.

But that's all too complicated for me, I just lift heavy things and put em down again.
