Although it may reflect somewhat nerd tendacies, review of the first-half 6 hours after the final whistle, having returned from Toulon, did nothing to dissapate the feeling that Nigel was one-eyed throughout that prriod:
1. McCarthy is not offside from ruck inside our 22m area which gives them 3 points;
2. At the ruck which created the off-side line for the penalty, Gogodze neck-throws / tackles Van der Flier off the left edge of the ruck;
3. Shortly after on right side of our 22m li.e, Ruddock carries hard into two Toulon players and ruck forms, Gorgodze arrives late and drives his right knee into Ruddock at head / shoulder area, watch Ruddock react as he gets up. The same action cost Healy later in the half - nothing accidental here, I slowed it down to check;
4. Our line-out on right in their half between 10m and their 22m, Dev catches and maul forms with Gorgodze (6), clearly driving in at the side. We win ball but get pinged off subsequent breakdown.
Strongly dislike blaming decisions for results, but the influence of Toulon crowd overcame Owens' normal excellence.
This is the side who have beaten us in 3 successive seasons, but we have never played them at home or beaten them. Next Sat, that record must be changed. More precision and the same commitment, with a noisy home crowd, can do the business.

Re: Toulon v Leinster
I'm sure that if you did the same review with a black and red hat on, you could find a similar set of results with the arm going the other way. Thats the case in most games. The reality is that we conceded a fecking shocking amount of penalties, many of them dumber than cheese. When we won or got lbps in tough away games in the past it was based on iron discipline and intelligence (Saracens in Wembley being the classic example). If you take those four examples you give above away from the totals, we still pretty much conceded twice as many penalties as the opposition - thats just poor.Ruckedtobits wrote:Although it may reflect somewhat nerd tendacies, review of the first-half 6 hours after the final whistle, having returned from Toulon, did nothing to dissapate the feeling that Nigel was one-eyed throughout that prriod:

Re: Toulon v Leinster
Only first run of first-half. My sense at game was that Healy was brainless but many other infringements were direct response to crowd reaction.17-7 penalty count against us according to Opta stats, but thus far, at least 3 of those could be knocked off as could at least two others with Armitage body-weight supported by his hands on the deck. Nigel crucified our brave pack.

I'm looking froward to the rematch, dead rubber that it be on our side. Sick of losing to these lads and having newspapers thrown on top of me!

Re: Toulon v Leinster
Can you set scheduled posts here like you can with tweets?
would save us all a lot of time instead of having to repost Molony over Denton, what does Healy have to do to get dropped, Ringrose needs to be involved etc
Ross and McFadden had really good games, Te'o nuillified by bigger boys (gave away silly penalties too)
Found it interesting Murphy was left riding pine

Re: Toulon v Leinster
WTF was Healy doing for the first try?? Toulon kick a penalty into the corner for a 5m lineout from which they predictably set a maul. Our loose head decides to stand off rather than engage the maul which duly trundles over our line with a minimum of resistance. Please tell me that this was not a preordained defensive tactic but rather was a monumental error of judgment from a player of vast experience who should know better.

Because he offers nothing apart from scrummaging and is well past his best. Moore and Furlong should be rotated this season. Ross is just too old and slow to keep going against the top sides.
He made 8 tackles, missed none, didn't give away any turnovers, didn't give away any penalties and carried effectively [3 carries for 9m]. Frankly, what you've said bears absolutely no relation to what on the pitch today.
Wow, a whole 3 carries for 9 metres. That should have the player of the season award in the bag then!

Re: Toulon v Leinster
Just to pick out a few positives from yesterday.
Ruddock looked back to his beastly best. If he can keep that up for the rest of the year he'll be starting in the 6N.
Fitz looked good at 12. Distribution a fraction off, but his feet were top notch.
I actually thought Healy did well after he came back on (though I too would've left him off). Aggressiveness that we could've done with elsewhere.
Mike Mac continues to defy age. His first up defence is excellent.
Ross put in a decent shift and our lineout held up very well.
And finally, VDF looks like a serious find. Still slightly underweight, but counters that with great feet and a smartness that's unlike most other backrows of his age.

Re: Toulon v Leinster
9 metres for a tighthead prop in a single game is huge, simply massive. Irelands cadre of tighthead props didn't make 9 metres in total during the entire World Cup. The entire complement of Toulon props that took the field, on both sides of the scrum, only made a total of 2 metres between all 4 of them. Bang 8 tackles in on top of that and it is indeed a player of the season type performance.carlow man wrote: Wow, a whole 3 carries for 9 metres. He had the highest tackle count of any prop on the field [alongside Marty Moore, but the latter missed two]; he had the highest tackle completion rate of any prop; he carried for the most metres of any prop; and he had the best average metre/carry of any prop. He also didn't concede any penalties or give the ball away once. By pretty much every metric, he was the best performing prop on the field.

I thought there were a good few positives alright. Jamie had a cracking game at No8 against a world class opposite number – felt that he took the spoils in their personal dual. Definitely Healy's best performance since his return. Gorgodze threw a similar knee in an earlier ruck but the French TV crew didn't bother to replay is 6-7 times. Such is life.wixfjord wrote:Just to pick out a few positives from yesterday.

Very little wrong with Isaac Boss' contribution – he has become [a bit unfairly, I think] a whipping boy on this forum, but he held up his end yesterday.
Worst game I have seen Sexton play in seven or eight years ... just brutal. He could barely put a foot right. If Madigan had put in that performance he would be ripped apart on here. Three kicks badly overcooked, a short restart, a badly missed penalty from his bogey side on the right of the field, three or four passes that slowed everything down ... that's a game he'll want to forget. Isa had a bit of a stinker as well.

CarlowMan, sling your hook on this one. Ross was at the core of a pack performance which gave us a chance to beat these guys. That it wasn't taken, wasn't his fault in any shape or form. He earned the right to hold the No 3 shirt for a while more, and that's in no way a cut against Moore or Furlong, whose time is nearly here, but not just yet

Re: Toulon v Leinster
We cannot expect to win the cup ever year but we can expect the best management of the resources that we have. O'Connor and Cullen have been abject failures in that regard. The selection of players bought in has been very poor and the use and development of what we have has been appalling.
The overall result of these failures is disastrous and will be long-lasting.
