Euro Squad 16/17

Post by johng »

You are allowed 41 in your Euro squad these days.

We have 41 players in our senior squad.

So the question is... Which academy players would you put in the Euro squad? and which the senior squad would you leave out.

My guess is Dardis, Nagle and one of the Byrne Bros for Carbury, Ross Byrne and O'Loughlin.

Perhaps the other Byrne Bro for Porter? Depends on if you want 4 hookers or 4 LH Props. AND if you would like to release the barnstorming Porter on poor unsuspecting opposition?

I assume there's still a requirement for a minimum of 10 front rowers in the squad. We've 11 in the senior squad (7 props, 4 hookers) but Ed Byrne and Strauss don't have return times on their injuries so we may have to promote a prop from the academy, if they're both out for the foreseeable.

We've only two 10's and two 9's in the senior squad so likely we'll have to promote one of each to the euro squad from the academy.

I'd love to see Porter in the squad just conscious we need to manage the workload for lads in attritional positioning. I think the way Healy was managed earlier in his career might not have been with longevity in mind. Same goes for SOB. Maybe as an impact sub, would be amazing experience for the lad!

Sorry. I forget who I left out for Nick McCarthy. I'll check later.

Edit: No one. I forgot to count Ross Byrne AND Carbury. Bound to have an injury or 2 to remove someone else.

Dardis is out for 4 months so him and the 2 Byrne brothers ; is the prop one the injured one? The not publicly known length of Strauss's abscence comes into it too

Definitely right about room to lose a lock

Not sure Ian Porter would be much use in the front row.

Just banging this in here also. So. Of a squad of now 40 (after Niall Morrises retirement) We are leaving out the injured Ed Byrne and Billy Dardis and the presumably fit Tom Daly

Boost for O'Loughlin over Daly. From the warm ups and recent games I'd say it's justified. However Daly has had no gametime to base a competition on

Anyone else see Tom Daly going the way of Collie O'Shea? He just doesn't seem to be getting a look-in.

Still no sign of any game-time for him. He must be getting pretty disillusioned at this stage.

Yeah, they clearly don't seem to rate him. Might get a look in during November, or Reid will start all those games.

He isn't helped by his lack of versatility.

Makes you wonder if provincial players always join the Sevens setup with the province's blessing or not.....

Could just be they prefer Rory, which is not hard to believe either.

Daly played 13 for the Ireland U20s, but if he's now viewed exclusively as a 12 then he isn't really in direct competition with O'Loughlin
