Eoghan Clarke has looked comfortable at every level he's played at this year. As a former back-row he is an excellent tackler and carrier and also pinches ball at breakdown. If his throwing stays up to scratch, he could make Academy

former backrow and front row so not lost in the scrum either.. if he continues to play like he did last weekend, i'd expect him to make the academy also.

Known as Porridge, according to a bizarre article yesterday.

Probably stemming from a very humorous James Lowe post match interview

How do they decided whether to give players an academy place straight out of school, or whether to wait a year? Is it based on ability or any other factors?

pretty unclear tbh... for instance James Ryan/Max Deegan did a year in the sub academy... Andrew Porter did two.

ability combined with other factors.. such a age group, physical development, other contract offers, depth at position etc.

for instance Ryan Baird would be the most obvious forward to get a deal out of school, but a lot of depth in his position and they don't like rushing 2nd rows.

I could see it happening, but don't think it's likely at the moment.

Interesting, I doubt it makes much difference but I had been wondering for a while what the process behind the selection was.

Also, they look pretty hard the personality of the player involved to see if he has the right mindset to be a professional rugby player

Bad? I missed the game.
Ruddock's tackle stats consistently too low for me to be taken seriously as a Six Nations blindside..... Ruddock's defensive stats don't stack up. - All Blacks Nil, Jan 15th, 2014
England A 8 - 14 Ireland A, 25th Jan 2014
Ruddock(c) 19/2 Tackles

The sad thing is that the 20's can have an impact on lads career prospects good and bad. You end up with a clown like Tierney involved and this can have a detrimental effect on what lads get academy places.

Surely Romania need a new coach.

Yeah but the "marginal" players might well get a contract elsewhere if they show up with the 20's. JDVF didn't have a huge profile either at school or with the 20's but he obviously showed enough to get through.

JVDF was already in the academy before 20's level, he was a surprise inclusion along with Leavy. So obviously he had been identified by the academy as a player with potential.

If the academy system is working and for the large part it is... then players shouldn't be lost because Tierney is a poor defence coach for the 20s.. but ideally it shouldnt be a concern.
