Connacht is chasing Caelan Doris as a replacement for Muldoon. He is from Mayo but boarded in Blackrock all through secondary school. It will be interesting to see how badly Leinster want to hold on to him. Played 6 on friday night in Marys defeat to Trinity in Div 1A.

Interesting. If they offer him a full-time contract then I'd say he'd go. How high is he rated here?by El Diablo

Re: Academy 2017/2018
Doris looks like a future international to me so I can see why Connacht are keen. He stood out for the Ireland U20s last season despite being U19. He has size on his side too.
Re: Academy 2017/2018
Very. I wouldn't be surprised if Leinster pushed the boat out to keep him.sunshiner1 wrote:Interesting. If they offer him a full-time contract then I'd say he'd go. How high is he rated here?by El Diablo

not surprising news, was always going to be targeted because of his talent level and where he grew up.
He'd be 20 leaving the academy if leinster gave him a senior deal, much the same as Deegan.

I have mixed feeling about this one.mildlyinterested wrote:not surprising news, was always going to be targeted because of his talent level and where he grew up.

In a way, I don't really want to see us fight hard to keep him if we don't genuinely think he's going to get meaningful gametime. If there is confidence that he can push into our starting backrow in the next 2-3 years, then great. But if he's just going to fall into line behind Deegan, Leavy, VDF, Ruddock & Conan, then maybe just let him go there for a couple of years and hope to bring him back down the line.
On the other hand, Heaslip and O'Brien are approaching the end of the line. We have 5 exceptionally talented back rowers in their 20s, two 8s, two 7s and one 6. A really talented second choice 6 would be great to have.

Forgive me if I'm being dense, but how can Connacht offer him a senior deal if the provinces can't outbid each other?

another province can offer an academy player a senior deal.. believe that's what happened with Cian Kelleher.scentofgunpowder wrote:Forgive me if I'm being dense, but how can Connacht offer him a senior deal if the provinces can't outbid each other?

Re: Academy 2017/2018
Have heard from a few sources that Doris is very highly rated and hitting all the markers needed to be a top pro.
Can't see him getting much first team rugby here for another 2-3 years however. Would make a lot of sense if he were to move

I wouldn't be surprised if he made his debut this season for Leinster, not the type of talent we want to be losing.arsebiscuits1 wrote:Have heard from a few sources that Doris is very highly rated and hitting all the markers needed to be a top pro.

But the only people he is likely to jump in the pecking order are Timmins and Deegan.
If Connacht come knocking with first team rugby promises week in week out it would be hard to keep him.
We can always get him back in 3-4 years

I don't think Leinster can be relying on the idea of bringing players back once they've left.
Leinster will not want to be lose him, hopefully they don't. The lure of "guaranteed" game time is strong, but if it worked like that leinster would probably lose a lot more players.

With Heaslip a big ?, SOB injury prone and international call ups likely we could need him.
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall who's the greatest player of them all? It is Drico your majesty.
Re: Academy 2017/2018
Any chance of us ever firing some shots back and sniffing around other provinces academies? If we're always being defensive trying to hold off approaches for our own homegrown talent, would it hurt to start offering UCD scholarships, paid for apartment in Dublin, VIP membership to coppers and a senior contract to a couple of decent prospect locks?
If we start poaching a lot more than we're losing (and in terms of location and profile we're the most attractive province imo) then there may be a lot less dogs sniffing around all of a sudden.
It's over a decade since we signed a player directly from Munster for example, if I'm not mistaken. (Hogan and Keogh)

Sean McNulty..
And yeah needless to say that's not the solution.
