Mildly, do you know what the story is with the former Belvo winger James McKeown? He looked like a pro waiting to happen at schools level, but I haven't heard anything about him since he played for the Irish U19s 20 months ago [source: http://www.irishrugby.ie/rugby/fixtures ... /37268.php ]. Any idea what's going on with him?

A number of promising players in that crew. Up front Clarke from Wanderers was very much in evidence whilst Sean O'Brien looked a smart operator in mid-field. No 7 Dunne and No 22 Fabian also had their moments in first and second half respectively.

Clarke is an interesting one, u18 intl prop... played 8 last season for CBC, moved to hooker.. huge need at that position obviously but has an uphill battle to get u20 intl caps.. which is usually where a leinster player earns an academy place

Leinster u19 youths lost 52-0 to St. Michaels College SCT in donnybrook yesterday.

realisitically michaels side is more talented, better conditioned, more familiar with each other and possibly better coached so result shouldn't really be a surprise.

still not a great scoreline to see.

Were you watching the game? And if so, who stood out for you? If you weren’t at the match, or you didn’t hear then no worries anyway.

Wow. Real throwback with some names in there.

I didn't know Colm O'Shea retired. Didn't he line out in an uncapped Ireland XV against the Baabaas?

Didn't they try and make Coughlan and Brewers into centres despite being promising back rowers?

The sheer amount of players still playing professionally is quite incredible
He's gotten awfully fond of that brick

The large number retired due to injury should worry rugby fans. There seems to be something fundamentally wrong with the game

Not really. 10 'retired due to injury' out of a list of 98 over a nine year period is not excessive to anybody who looks at such numbers. Across pro & semi-pro rugby in France the weekly injury rate is 20% within some 40 Clubs. Premiership and Championship have similar numbers based on a study by (or for) the Pro Players Association in 2015.

On that basis, our numbers for injury retirements is low and in fact compares favourably with the equivalent in Club Rugby here in Ireland c. 2010. (Haven't seen more recent numbers)

20% retirements due to injury is a shocking statistic and surely calls for remedial action by the authorities. I think it beyond doubt that rugby is becoming more attritional by the year and that there will be consequences flowing from that.

@raydollard, slight anomoly in the statistical comparison as the 20% is the average weekly injury list among those 40 French clubs, not directly comparable with retirements due to injury.

However, it is a contact sport and as far back as the mid-1990's Irish AIL Clubs were using on average 37 players in an AIL season and often had more that a fifth (20%) unavailable at any given point in the season. That's just seven or eight players missing each week, which is a fairly normal sceanario for any rugby coach at competitive level.

Was researching Roman Salanoa there. He's 19, and was an American high school bench press champion (185 kg, almost as much as Cian Healy). He's Hawaiaan/Tongan Polynesian and was in college on an American football scholarship but played both rugby and American football throughout high school, and has played for the US u-20 rugby team.. He's 6'0" tall and weighs a pretty colossal 134 kg (21 st 3 lb). Presumably the type of ridiculous athlete where if he can be made fit and technically sound, could make a big impact at the highest level.
