Ah, of course. Forgot that.

Think so, yeah. Think this is his second season.

In terms of players with a contract for next season.

Ulster have just Coetzee as mentioned.

Munster have Botha and Cloete

Leinster have Tomane and Lowe.

Connacht have Godwin and Butler.

Klein Marshall and JGP qualify before the WC.

Lowe Butler and Cloete are the last of the 3 year qualifiers in 2020 (and the 2 lads in the Munster academy I think)

No one else can qualify before 2023. The only 2 who can qualify then are Horowitz and Fainga'a and that would require them to get at least one more contract.

Players who currently don't have (or haven't announced) a contract for next season are

Connacht. Fainga'a and Horowitz.
Ulster. Nobody.
Munster. Taute (defo leaving) and Mathewson. (Who knows)
Leinster. Fardy

IRFU are well positioned to quietly change the rules to 1 NIQ and 1 NIE if they wanted

Botha only signed a 1 year deal for 2018/19 season.

Can add Sam Carter to the Ulster list.

Botha has a contract until 2020. He signed an extension.

Carter is indeed confirmed for Ulster though.

Didn't realise that about Botha. So Kleyn, Marshall and JGP are eligible for the RWC?

Kleyn
Marshall
Bleyandaal
JGP
Tom McCartney
Herbst
Ludik

...are the as yet uncapped Players who already have or will qualify by residency in time time to be eligible for selection for the RWC. I don't think I've missed anyone out - I'm not counting guys like Haley or Billy Burns who qualify by parentage

Of the above, I reckon Kleyn has a real shot of making the squad. Not sure why McCartney hasn't been looked at yet, he qualified in nov 2017

Ulster have signed an Australian second row for next season.

Kleyns chances of making the squad I think will rest on how Dillane and Roux get on in the next few weeks. If they both show they're up to it then we've 6 decent international options

Would McCartney get a look in in the warm ups?

Tbh I haven't really rated him since the 2016 season where they won it. He hasn't really nailed down a starting slot at Connacht since then
He's gotten awfully fond of that brick

McCartney is way past his best, Heffernan/Delahunt ahead of him for Connacht.

Back on the topic of leinster 2nd rows, Charlie Ryan's performance last weekend against England was highly encouraging, looked much more athletic and mobile than a year ago. He along with Dunne and Baird give leinster three young 2nd rows to be excited about, although like most 2nd rows they'll need time to develop and mature.

Agreed, he has progressed really well. I saw him earlier in the season in an 'A' game and had obviously seen some of his performances for the U20s last year, and I was pretty unsure as to whether this guy – who has a pretty flawless pedigree up through the ranks - was going to get a spot in the academy at all.

But he was very impressive against England and with one performance he completely convinced me. That doesn't count for a hill of beans of course, but it's always nice to see a guy coming good.

Would big match temperament, while a bit simplistic, be the key?

Talented but to be honest doesn't look good enough to challenge for multiple trophies. Badly need to keep Fardy.

True and we're already lost 3 players in other positions before releases. Nagle probably being gone would mean losing 2 locks.

"I suppose I am that bit older and the last year or so I have found myself really enjoying my rugby, almost taking stock midweek and looking around at these young lads and being very grateful for the opportunities presented. And even more so if you are in the match-day squad and making the most of it because I really enjoy training and playing with these guys. A great group of lads. I'm enjoying my rugby now, feel good and it's great to be able to get a run at the moment and to be involved again this week."

Mick Kearney sounds like he is happy enough at leinster.
