We certainly have some depth at this point. Dunne, Charlie Ryan and Ryan Baird are all decent "discoveries". Add in Molony's progress and you'd have to be satisfied with where we're at.

Charlie Ryan has most tackles made for irish players at u20 world cup, with 36.

Baird going well at 6 at the moment, interested to see if leinster look at him there next season or stick with developing him at 4.
Re: Leinster's 2nd Row options
I agree with you overall but Molony hasn't made progress in about two years. Big window for him during the world cup.Ruckedtobits wrote:We certainly have some depth at this point. Re: Leinster's 2nd Row options
Molony made plenty of progress last season, he is just comfortably 4th choice behind Ryan, Toner and Fardy. Which is fine.
Re: Leinster's 2nd Row options
I think Molony was disappointing overall last season. Did reasonably well near the end though.

disagree, thought he performed well only disappointing when missing the run-in due to his back problem.

+1. He had a fine season up until injury. I'm really happy with how he is progressing and he will be capped in the next couple of years if he continues that level of progress.mildlyinterested wrote:disagree, thought he performed well only disappointing when missing the run-in due to his back problem.

Baird and Ryan look like good like-for-like replacements for Fardy and Toner down the line. I'd imaging the five locks in the Euro squad next season will be Toner, Ryan, Molony, Dunne and Baird.

I mean 2020/2021. Fardy'll probably be gone by then.fourthirtythree wrote:Um.... Fardy?

Re: Leinster's 2nd Row options
Baird looks like a natural replacement for Fardy, capable of playing 6 and lock.
Dunne/Ryan look like typical TH locks going forward.. will be a delicate process/balance developing both.
Dowling looks unlikely to make it at lock with the superior talented players coming up behind him.

Agreed, the writing was on the wall for Dowling when he didn’t get a senior contract despite there only being 4 senior locks in the squad with 2 likely to be in Japan.mildlyinterested wrote:Baird looks like a natural replacement for Fardy, capable of playing 6 and lock.

Re: Leinster's 2nd Row options
Dialing got capped for Leinster in his 2nd year of academy and is going into his 3rd year. Most locks are slow burners. He has a hard path with younger competition but he still has a chance.Jonny tight lips wrote:Agreed, the writing was on the wall for Dowling when he didn’t get a senior contract despite there only being 4 senior locks in the squad with 2 likely to be in Japan.mildlyinterested wrote:Baird looks like a natural replacement for Fardy, capable of playing 6 and lock.

Re: Leinster's 2nd Row options
Dowling's pretty small though, 6'4" to 6'5" range and 105kg. Might end up having more of a future at 6, at Leinster or elsewhere.
