The force is strong in this one.
I don't think I'm quite reshaping reality to suit my preference though.
I know the IRFU set up the provinces and has a major controlling stake in them. I know, and reluctantly accept, that the national side takes preference.
I just don't think our PRIMARY goal is to feed the national side. There is a diference.
If it were, why is there no mention of the national side in the Leinster Rugby mission statement, for example?
Even the IRFU strategy talks about a successful national team underpinned by winning provinces, with provincial academies to meet the needs of the professional game (no mention of the primary goal being to feed the national side). It sets specific goals for provinces winning the Heineken Cup.
If we provincial fans don't challenge and just swallow Nucifora's interpretation of Irish rugby's governance - in particular, that the primary goal of Leinster is to feed players into the national side - then it will become a new a IRFU rule: the goal of the Leinster academy is to churn out players who can be moved at the whim of the national rugby coach to their rivals, whilst still under contract. I will keep challenging that narrative, and find it depressing if other Leinster fans are willing to just accept it and join the dark side.
