Leinster's Centre Options going forward

Post by mildlyinterested »

Ages as of end of the 2017/18 season.

Isa Nacewa(35) - Signed 2yr contract in 2016
Noel Reid(28) - Signed contract in 2017
Robbie Henshaw(24) - Signed 3yr contract in 2016
Tom Daly(24) - Signed contract in 2017
Rory O'Loughlin(24) - Signed contract in 2017
Garry Ringrose(23) - Signed contract in 2016

Conor O'Brien(22) - Academy Year 2
Jimmy O'Brien(21) - Academy Year 2
Jack Kelly(20) - Academy Year 2
Gavin Mullin(20) - Academy Year 1
Ciaran Frawley(20) - Academy Year 1
Tommy O'Brien(20) - Academy Year 1

Isa Nacewa is out of contract this season and you'd presume is set to retire again, while Robbie Henshaw is signed through the world cup. Garry Ringrose could well be out of contract this summer after signing a deal in 2016, Tom Daly joins him as a player very likely out of contract this summer. Ringrose presumably is negotiating for a central contract with the IRFU, while Daly's injury makes it hard to predict what will happen with him and Leinster.
Noel Reid and Rory O'Loughlin are very unlikely to be out of contract after signing deal last season.

There are many potential centres in the academy at the moment, players who have been primarily centres since leaving school: Conor O'Brien, Jimmy O'Brien and Gavin Mullin. And players who have played multiple positions since leaving school: Jack Kelly, Ciaran Frawley and Tommy O'Brien. Where these players settle is hard to predict at this stage.

In the sub academy Sean O'Brien(Clontarf), Conor's younger brother, looks the most likely player to push for an academy place. Although it looks unlikely given the number of players in the academy at the moment that can play the position. Other players to keep an eye on are James Moriarty(DUFC), Ted O'Donoghue(Terenure) and Myles Carey(St. Marys)

and he mixed the good with the bad.

hopefully he can stay healthy now and get a good run of games at AIL level.

He's neither the first nor the last rookie to have a mixed bag playing with the "kids" away from home.
Ruddock's tackle stats consistently too low for me to be taken seriously as a Six Nations blindside..... Ruddock's defensive stats don't stack up. - All Blacks Nil, Jan 15th, 2014
England A 8 - 14 Ireland A, 25th Jan 2014

Nope, thought he showed promise overall.

Shame he is blocked by Matt Darcy at 12 for Clontarf.

Macken leaving Wasps at end of season. 30 games in 3 season's, and they say we rest our players?
Could be an option for us to fill the centre with the internationals away.
You know I'm going to lose,
And gambling's for fools,
But that's the way I like it baby, I don't want to live FOREVER!

That's Co. Carlow FC.
Along with Trinity, Wanderers and possibly someone else they predate the IRFU and the use of 'rugby'.

No hassle. Discussed here. 9 clubs predate IRFU.

Meanwhile, Noel Reid could leave Leinster at the end of this season, with Leicester Tigers keen on the long-serving centre's services.

The Dubliner, who won one cap for Ireland against Argentina in 2014, is expected to start against Bath at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday in Robbie Henshaw's absence, but knows that he is down the pecking order when everyone is fit for the European champions.

Reid made his first senior appearance for the province in 2011 and has played 107 times for the first team.

Tigers, have a long history of recruiting from Leinster with Dominic Ryan the last player to make the move.

Now 28, Reid's versatility, passing game and senior experience make him attractive option for Geordan Murphy's side.

Another Leinster midfielder on the move in Tom Daly who is is set to join Connacht on loan until the end of the season.

The Carlow man has endured a torrid time with injuries in recent years and has fallen down the pecking order at his home province, playing twice off the bench this season.
