Overseas Players

Post by bails »

Can somebody answer me this question please.

Toulon fielded Nonu, Mathewson and Fekitoa, on Saturday. All are capped All Blacks. How can they do that whilst we are restricted to 2 from Australia or New Zealand ?

Are we peanalised because we’re a Pro 14 team, or is it that we are Irish ?

Can you add Facundo Isa to that list too?

I imagine one or two of the kiwis have procured samoan/fijian/tongan/ANother passport which allows them to play under kolpak.

The author uses a previous Toulon team as an example here so I assume they're aware of how to sidestep the rules.

For the same reason we can field Nacewa outside of the rule, I assume. It depends on passports and nationalities. Presumably Nonu has dual nationality with one of the island nations.

It's a stupid rule though. I'd love to see us challenge it.

Both Nonu and Fekitoa are actually Samoan. Fekitoa lived there until he was 17 and Nonu's family are all Samoan. Nonu recently came out and said he wanted to represent Samoa in 2019 using the Olympic loop hole.

Fekitoa is Tongan, though the exemption still applies.

Seems ridiculous that all three have been capped by New Zealand but still able to use Samoan, Tongan heritage to bea5 the system
