Munster has 5 fully contracted outhalves.
Ulster, AFAIK, only one.

Of our two, one will play in only 10-15 squads over the season, depending on how we do, and how fit he is.
Didn't see Marsh in the list, has he shipped out?

That was announced in April and it has not been un-announced, so to speak.

Is Aungier ready to get the minutes Adam Coyle got last season, or could Coyle be called up again?

Very curious about Duggan. I wouldn't exactly say we're light on looseheads but the youngest are 24 so I'd have thought there was a spot for him given that he's pretty good.

Thanks for the list MI.

With Vakh, Bent, Porter and Furlong we should have enough TH cover, but one injury could mean Aungier gets a bit of a bench opportunity alright. Really interested to see how Vakh goes this year.

Interesting lack of hookers.

I know we have the same amount of looseheads but Porter or Bent could switch over if we were proper stuck.

I hope we don't leave ourselves too thin in such a specialist position.

All it would take is an injury to one while Cronin is away on national duty (i know Scannell and Herring went well in Oz - but I still think Cronin will be number 2) and we look very light indeed

3 contracted hookers (with a decent spread of experience), one of whom will probably be the Ireland reserve (but may not be).
2 contracted outhalves; both of whom could conceivably be in Irish matchday squad, and one of whom will be unavailable for most of the season.

I understand your concern but think the concern elsewhere is more acute.

What does Frawley's contract situation matter? He's still the same player regardless of whether he has a pro contract or not

Don't think we have too many hookers. Obviously injuries could make a nonsense of that, but I am very keen to see Ronan Kelleher get some games next season. Really big talent. I think if we put him in games, he'll do well.

Can't say I have too many concerns about hooker. Cronin, Tracy, Byrne and Kelleher are good options. Call up someone from club rugby if an extra body is needed during the season

A complicated question.
What is a reasonable sized squad assuming all things being equal ie all provinces pulling their weight.
(Pulling their weight doesn't necessarily mean pulling an equal weight)
As an ideal criteria let's say, on average, that Leinster should provide 40% of the players to national squad, Connacht 10% with Munster and Ulster providing 25% each.
The criteria might include population size, playing numbers, competition from other sports but is not the issue here.
Based on the%s above what is the pro rata correct size for each provincial squad.
That's the simplest scenario.
The minimum size squad is probably 46, 23 X 2 - Connacht.
The maximum size squad is probably 69, 23 X 3 - Leinster.
Leaving Ulster and Munster somewhere in the middle, 58, 23 X 2 23/2 = 58 rounded up.

Hooker could go either way IMO. Tracy and Byrne are inconsistent and Kelleher is an unknown quality right now. I'm hopeful about them all and was particularly happy with Byrne's improvement but wouldn't exactly say it's an area of strength for us.

I wouldnt be surprised to see them bring a club hooker in on trial - Paddy Finlay being the most obvious choice.

They offered eoghan clarke an academy place so it's an area they feel needs addressing in terms of depth.

Bryan Byrne's improvement and consistency at the end of the season was encouraging.
