Celtic Cup

Post by leinsterforever »

First game is against Ulster this Friday at 17:00 at Malone RFC

My stab at the kind of selection we might see:

1. Dunno, sub-academy player presumably?
2. Ronan Kelleher (he fit?)
3. Jack Aungier
4. Ian Nagle
5. Jack Dunne
6. Oisín Dowling
7. Scott Penny
8. Ronan Watters?
9. Hugh O'Sullivan
10. Harry Byrne
11. Aaron O'Sullivan
12. Tom Daly (ahead of COB based on warm-ups selection)
13. Jimmy O'Brien
14. Tommy O'Brien
15. Jack Kelly

16. Dylan Donnellan
17.
18. Michael Milne
19. Ryan Baird
20.
21. Patrick Patterson
22. Conor O'Brien
23. Michael Silvester

I suppose we could see a few of the players from the Cardiff squad dropping down if a few internationals (Cronin, Conan maybe) return for the Scarlets game

Maybe a front-row of Ed Byrne, Kelleher & Vak. I'd expect almost every fit Academy player to get a run, given the delays in getting the top 12-15 out for the Senior team.

Abdaladze, yeah. Forgot about him. Mildlyinterested has Milne playing loosehead for the U20/Dev team, so he could start there. I'd like to see Byrne kept with the senior team to face the Scarlets

Forgot Keenan and Mullin too. Keenan might be a good option at 15 with his open-field running and distribution skills.

I suppose it's possible Murphy and Doris might play if the back five of the pack v Scarlets looks something like: 4. Molony, 5. Fardy, 6. Ruddock, 7. van der Flier, 8. Deegan; 19. Toner, 20. Conan

I reckon they'll start the lad Baird in the row, he's supposed to be an exceptional talent. Caelan Doris might be available for selection at No8 if Conan is released back to the senior squad.

Tommy O'Brien is injured so Hugo Keenan will be one of the wingers. I think Jimmy O'Brien is injured too, and Gavin Mullin is definitely injured, so wouldn't be surprised to see Conor O'Brien and Tom Daly together in the centres.

don't see any point in playing nagle.. Dowling, Dunne and Baird please.

Would Lowe be a possibility if he's not playing the Scarlets? It would be a great experience for the young guys to play with a rock star player like him

The Welsh have rowed back on that U23 nomenclature. They're now calling them A sides.

Quite suprised to see Molony in that squad. I thought he played very well last week. Strong carries.

I wonder is this a little appeasing selection to show the Welsh we're taking it at least a bit seriously? Leinster clearly see Molony as a leader so perhaps they want a senior voice in that pack.

I wonder if Dooley has jumped back over Byrne as 3rd choice LH

That means either Fardy or Lowe v Scarlets....

OR

They are hoping Patterson can play 80 and O'Sullivan will be on both benches

Surprised about Molony too. He did make some mistakes last week but overall I thought he was good and looked much more powerful than last year (he did get swallowed up a few times but that was when he was on his own and couldn't really be expected to make ground) so was hoping he'd get anther go. Maybe we have Dev AND Ryan back for Saturday?

Assuming we only get one of Healy or McGrath back for Saturday then I'm also surprised that Ed Byrne didn't keep his place, thought he was good last week.

A pretty good team though considering we have another game and there'll be loads of Irish players unavailable. Glad to see Sylvester on the wing, think he's much better there than at fullback. I'd like to see Kelly stick to one position, not sure left wing should be it though. Pity it's not at home, interesting side.

Edit: Forgot about Nagle, was thinking that Kearney could be the 24th man, so probably only the one second row back.

Could be Toner and Fardy starting, with Murphy benching

He's a very good center, might be a bit small for professional rugby though in that position. Great lad with a fantastic attitude too, really hope he makes it.

Is this the same Liam Turner that captained Rock last season?

Very impressive to be playing A rugby for Leinster if so. I don't think many step up that early
