I just noticed that the ages of our 9 senior back rowers at the start of next season (27/9/19) will be....

Ruddock 28
Conan 27
Van der Flier 26
Leavy 25
Murphy 24
Connors 23
Deegan 22
Dorris 21
Penny 20

With none in the Academy. (Until they announce the 1st years). Noice!

Ha. So it was. Didn't notice.

Fairly tight time frame because Penny only turns 20 on the 22nd of September and Deegan turns 23 on the 1st of October.

That's an incredibly encouraging age profile. Even with Leavy's injury and the players we've lost we should be stacked there for years.

The way Ruddock plays, he has another 5 years left in him. He is an absolute warrior who you'd always want on your side.

I count Dowling as a 2nd row.

Best positions? Is Moloney a little short for a 6 at the top level? If he ends up at 7....

It's the best position of Van Der Flier, Leavy, Connors and Penny.

6 Ruddock, Murphy.....

8 Conan, Deegan, Dorris.

6 is where the space is ok even with a few locks able to cover. Perhaps that's why they have Dowling playing there a bit. And have played Deegan and Conan there on occasion. And indeed Leavy

Not sure about Moloney his size and playing 6 at pro level. Be interested to see if he plays 7 at all during JWC.

I think he will be a shorter version of Will Connors.

I wasn't comparing them. Just pointing out that 6'2" is probably more a 7 than a 6 these days although Richie would have been v tall for a "Fetcher" when he started.

Yeah I'm not sure, I think he will play both at leinster.

played 6 for A team earlier in the season and where he largely played at underage.

Why bother with the academy any more after Nucifora's new deal,
Call a spade a spade and just have a central academy

  • Dont know too much about some of the lads below academy level. I'm just basing it on MI's lists and updates, and, in some cases, on how selection went in the Celtic Cup
  • Robert Kearney not signed up again yet
  • We've got loads of wings on the books. All the #23s can play on the wing, and McFadden and Sylvester have been focusing on playing wing in recent times. Looks as if some of them are going to struggle for gametime next season. The Kelleher signing must be to try to get the right dynamic in terms of age profile, because there's no shortage of options
  • There could be a fair amount of fluidity between the 2nd and 3rd squads in terms of the likes of Tomane, Tommy O'Brien, McFadden and Kelleher moving up and down the pecking order depending on how well they're performing
