Leinster may not benefit from semi-final matchday income but surely they benefit prizemoney wise for reaching a semi-final and even more so if they win it.

Also a home Leinster semi-final must also benefit the IRFU as presumably the EPCR have to pay for the use of Lansdowne and some of this has to trickle back to Leinster if they are team that has caused the semi final to be played in Dublin.

Or do I have some of this wrong?
Prize money goes to the Union.

Where you benefit is from 'selling' the win - you get bonuses from your sponsors, can charge new/renewing sponsors more - that kind of thing

Would that sort of thing be built into a contract with sponsors.
For example would you have any idea (guess even) what the 4th star was worth.
How much might Three in a Row be worth? (I'm an optimist)

I know the question of where the prize money goes has been answered, but it’s interesting to consider how relatively paltry the prize money actually is.

Leinster were paid €300k for their win in the quarter final last year. Semi final wins pay out something similar and winning the tournament outright nets you €600k.

I’d imagine Leinster also sees very little of that money filtering back into the coffers.

@Dave Cahill has it exactly right. The value to Leinster is totally in 'Brand Value' and what they have negotiated with sponsors.

Edinburgh v Montpellier is turgid stuff so far. 9 nil to Edinburgh after 33 minutes.

19 10 to Edinburgh at full time. Guarantees Leinster a quarter final place.

19-10 Edinburgh, Thats a home QF for them, Leinster, Racing and Glasgow all in the QF's too. Still need a slip up by Racing or Sari's for a home Semi chance.

Could be Edinburgh at home to Munster now. Between both teams there will prob be nearly a complete team of South Africans!

I thoughti that was a fascinating contest between two teams utterly concentrated on winning.

It may have been fascinating and certainly competitive but I thought the skill levels were quite poor.

So Ulster are through if Exeter do not get 5points at Munster?

If Ulster pick up 1 point at Leicester they're through. If they get nathin' then it would need a 5-1 or 5-2 match points win for Exeter to knock them out. That's assuming that Toulouse pick up at least 1 point at home to Bath.

If they don't pick up a point, other results (no matter how unlikely) can mathematically leave them as fourth placed runners up, so they are not yet through.

I’m not smart enough to do a screen grab and post the picture here but their “as it stands” table didn’t have a “q” beside Ulster.
