"Today was the first day of pre-season for us in UCD so to now have the full Heineken Champions Cup draw confirmed, in addition to last week's confirmed Guinness PRO14 conferences, it definitely sharpens the mind for the considerable task ahead this season," he said.

19th June today, their last game was 25th May ... that's three weeks off for those who played in the final. They broke the pre-season training in two last year, I expect they'll do the same this year. There's no point in giving players so much time off that they lose their high fitness levels: you just waste time and effort getting them back to where they were and it puts a significant strain on the body [and the psyche] as they get older.

Matthew Pinsent wrote about it in his autobiography, which I unfortunately don't have to hand. The jist of it was, after an extended holiday from rowing, he returned to training with the Olympic squad ... my memory is that it was some sort of long distance uphill cycle, and he made it sound literally like a bad trip. Hellish stuff. He was so far out of shape that it went on forever, and he didn't know at the end of it if he was at the end of his career or not. He had pushed himself as hard as he could, and he was so far off the pace of his team-mates/competitors that he lost a huge degree of confidence in his physical ability.

Long story short was that he got lots of support from his wife, he's a very resilient character and he made his way back to the peak of his sport, but he wrote that he was basically always in training from that point on until the end of his career. He never took a significant break away from training [obviously allowing for periodisation], was really disciplined about nutrition and rest etc. for years on end.

It seems really sensible. I really hated pre season even at amateur level. You finished the season with a pretty decent level of fitness, went off on the piss for the summer and came back at the start of August for 4/5 weeks of hell having done nothing for months.

As I recall from last year they do something like 2 weeks on here, 2 weeks off and then back into "pre-season proper"

Charlie Higgins broke it down here

https://www.the42.ie/rugby-fitness-lein ... 1-Jul2018/
25 days on from beating Scarlets to seal the Pro14 title, the likes of James Lowe, Rhys Ruddock and Jamison Gibson-Park were back in boots on 20 June getting set for 2018/19.

Last week, with other provinces approaching the full swing of their preparations, Leinster broke for a two-week holiday again and their time is their own until 23 July.

Well, not entirely their own, says head of athletic performance Charlie Higgins.

“(It’s) a working holiday,” Higgins says on LeinsterRugby.ie, “we’ll give them GPS units, a programme, and they can train remotely for two weeks, improving on their strength and conditioning.”
He's gotten awfully fond of that brick

It'll be a tight squeeze in Donnybrook for that one. Imagine the downstairs bar area in Old Wesley will be used as a changing room.

Will they not use both clubhouses?

They will but to fit 4 teams especially ones of the size that mens pre season squads are, in the normal changing rooms will be near impossible. I imagine the two womens teams will be in the Bective end to allow access to the bective pitch to warm up and the two mens teams will be in the Old Wesley end with one in the downstairs bar area.

Saints' preparations for the new season will go up a gear on Thursday 12 September as we host PRO14 champions and European finalists Leinster at the Gardens.

very little preseason content from leinster, not surprising given its been historically poor coverage but still disappointing.

I'm guessing the game against Coventry will largely be a warm-up match for the Celtic Cup side with more experienced heads appearing away to Canada and Northampton?
