Leinster U18 Clubs 31 Ulster U18 Clubs 12
The Leinster U18 Clubs added Ulster to the scalps of Munster and Connacht in capturing the Interprovincial Championship at the University of Limerick on Sunday afternoon.
Coach Joe Carbery introduced a quartet of changes in the shape of right wing Conor Gibney, loose-head Ben Popplewell as well as flankers Oisin King and John Ascough.
The 40-10 eclipse of Munster on day one was backed-up by the 19-12 defeat of Connacht in the middle leg of the three-round competition to put Leinster in the driving seat.
If they thought they were in for an easy ride, they were quickly reminded of taking each game on its merits when Ulster benefitted from a block-down to move into a 5-0 lead in the ninth minute.
Gradually, Leinster began to move with menace and opened Ulster up for Ruairi Clarke to surge through the gain line, stretching to the whitewash, Fionn O’Hara converting for a 7-5 lead in the 15th minute.
On his first start, Gibney picked off two tries in five minutes, the first coming from a break through the middle for a simple two-on-one to put the right wing into the corner.
The second was an opportunistic effort, Gibney smartly picking from a ruck to take advantage of Ulster’s thin line from the 22, out-half O’Hara converting for 19-5 at the interval.
Leinster were beginning to find their flow and Jack Hanlon make it into the left corner 26-5 for O’Hara’s extras to take the game out of reach.
Ulster were able to strike for a second try before Leinster rubber stamped the title with the last play of the game when sustained pressure from good carries by Daniel Adekunle, Josh O’Hare, Abdul Olabaskan made enough room on the outside for O’Hara to steal to the line.
“We are just delighted for the lads for the effort they have put day-in, day-out, working extremely hard,” said Team Manager Robbie Mullen.
“Everything they do is down to what they put in and all of the players were capped.
“We went to Newcastle for a week which benefitted the squad and we came into the Festival ready to perform.”
Scorers – Leinster: F O’Hara try, 3 cons, C Gibney two tries, R Clarke, J Hanlon try each.

Re: Leinster Academy 19/20
Leinster U18 Schools 20 Munster U18 Schools 23
The Leinster Schools were unable to go unbeaten through the Interprovincial Series, coming unstuck against Munster at UL on Sunday evening.
They did have the considerable consolation on the day of claiming the title on a superior record.
The southern province’s out-half Shane Buckley struck for a dramatic last-minute penalty to seal the three-point triumph.
It was Leinster’s first loss in two seasons at this level and it could have been so different, if they had taken more of the chances that came their way.
The Blues were able to construct two tries in the first-half by wing Shane Mallon and out-half Charlie Tector.
In fact, Tector was responsible for 12 of the 17 points that enabled them to hold a three-point edge at the break.
Similarly, Munster had broken through twice for tries by Daniel Hurley and Jack Oliver, both converted by Buckley, when they seized on spilled balls.
The Blues could add nothing more significant than another penalty by Tector in the second period.
The outcome was determined by the goal-kicking exploits of Buckley, the final swing of his boot the crucial factor.
While Munster won the battle, Leinster took the spoils of war from retaining their title.
“We just made too many errors on the day. That is not good enough against a good side like Munster,” said coach Andy Skehan.
“We were disappointed by that, but, ultimately, very happy with the progression and performance over the last eight weeks we’ve been together.
“It is always nice to have the silverware to reflect the good work.”
Scorers – Munster: D Hurley, J Oliver try each, S Buckley 3 pens, 2 cons; Leinster: C Tector try, 2 pens, 2 cons, S Mallon try.

Thought Cosgrave struggled against Connacht but showed a few glimpses of his attacking talent. He’s quite slight and lost the ball in contact a few times.

Wasn't exactly the weather for outside backs, but he is slight for modern day centre.. even for his age.scentofgunpowder wrote:Thought Cosgrave struggled against Connacht but showed a few glimpses of his attacking talent. He’s quite slight and lost the ball in contact a few times.
which is why he played fullback for irish 18's last season.

He’s no stocky Liam Turner but he’s around same height as Ringrose and Ringrose was a bit skinny at Senior Cup but he filled out his frame well when he went into the academy and has gotten a lot bigger and stronger, always potential to put on plenty of muscle mass in the academy it’s not like he’s short he has the heightmildlyinterested wrote:Wasn't exactly the weather for outside backs, but he is slight for modern day centre.. even for his age.scentofgunpowder wrote:Thought Cosgrave struggled against Connacht but showed a few glimpses of his attacking talent. One of the videos that put Chris Cosgrave on the radar with the best Junior Cup performance you could ask for. His passing and kicking is perfect. Insane for a player a Junior cup level

If this is a depth chart, why are you not including prominent injured players?

Yeah I went to the game as it was just down the road from me. They were seriously impressive, forwards and backs. Scrum, maul and lineout were all excellent, as was their tackling.mildlyinterested wrote:Cosgrave's future at the pro level will be in the back three. Couldn't believe the quality of the 14's kicking, he was also extremely quick for his try.

It's a very talented group of players, who were missing some potential academy players at 2 and 9. And arguably had their best 10 on the bench.Dexter wrote:Yeah I went to the game as it was just down the road from me. They were seriously impressive, forwards and backs.
