What's the best route down to Cardiff via car? The main one shown in the above link or heading east and Taking the motorway down?

Cheers

+ 1 Without a shadow of a doubt. The way suggested, picture 5/6 hours journey on a old - Wicklow-esque single road with towns and villages to negociate every so often.

Message received loud and clear! So basically head towards Chester and hop on the m53 there and then pop down the m6 from warrington?

But if you had all day Friday to get to Cardiff and wanted to do a bit of sightseeing would the more 'wicklowesque' route be better?

I'm driving down from Holyhead to cardiff. having never done the drive, and hearing many horror stories i'm beginning to get twitchy! is the motorway from chestor/warrington the best way to go?... or pick a more direct route through mainland wales?

thanks!

People seem to be saying Chester Warrington is the best way to go!

motorway for sure

but the scenic route is breathtaking in places
definitely worth the delay if you can afford it

We (inadvertantly) took the scenic route down on Friday............absolutely stunning scenery. We left Holyhead at 11 and didn't get to Cardiff until 5pm(stopped off for about 45 minutes in Balla en route.
Came back via the motorway today............5 hours with a half hour stop at the services...........knackered but worth it!

I don't know which way we went, but tried to skirt Shrewsbury. Took 6 hrs including about 1hr of lunch & traffic.

Changed return journey to leave via Fishguard to Rosslare. 2hrs, practically all motorway. Will never go through HH again.

Went the scenic route on Friday and again yesterday and I'm glad we did because it was absolutely stunning.

Had a small mishap when setting the Satnav on Friday so 'Boris' ended up taking us for a slightly more scenic tour of Wales than originally planned but as it turned out we saw some really beautiful out of the way places that we may never have found otherwise.

The drive down took almost seven hours but with plenty of sightseeing and food stops along the way and the trip back took about 5 1/2 hours.

What a weekend.

Pretty much mirror of the trip we took. Meant to take the motorway but sat nav "Betty" directed us through the mountains... who were we to argue!
Forced BEtty to get us home on motorway and made it in 5hrs with 30 mins stop for burger king at the motorway in telford. Next time... if I cant get a flight, I'm coming in via fishguard!

Fishguard is quite far West but may suit some. I went down via A55/??/M6/M5 etc. About 5.5 hours with a stop. Came back via Shrewsbury and north to the A55 which was about the same but the Motorway to Shrewsbury is much more relaxed than the M6. I think I would take that route again although there might be a few bottleneck sections if you hit certain sections at a bad time..
