Re: Ireland u20 2013/14
I had such high hopes for Josh Holmes. Thought he had the lot and that he'd become one of the greats, still don't know what went wrong. Not that his career has been a disaster.
As for the match on Friday. Thought we did some great things in patches. Not sure what happened between the England game and NZ but our set piece and breakdown were in another level. First up defence was much better too although obviously NZ cut us to pieces out wide. As happy as I was with our first half performance, couldn't help but feel disappointed by how we folded against England when we were capable of so much more.
I'll mention Brewer again purely because he gets so much criticism and was on of the few criticised on Friday. Don't think he was anywhere near as bad as made out. His missed tackle...or lack of effort is probably more appropriate...for LI's try was pathetic but in general I thought his defence was quite good. He made a couple of nice offloads and showed good feet at times too. Problem for me is that he has tremendous power but doesn't really use it in attack, and has really good skills but uses them at the wrong times. I'm hopeful that the academy will help him with all that and time is certainly on his side BUT he's coming through at a time when there's lots of competition and so I doubt he'll get the same kind of opportunities as someone like Macken to sort things out. Could go either way but he's still young enough to play 20s next season so hopefully there'll be a big improvement in how he uses his strengths. The go forward we got from Goggin when he came on was noticeable, really like the look of him actually.
Would pretty much echo what others said about who impressed. Molony in the second row was briliant on Friday, really like the look of Taggart too. He reminds me of a slightly less athletic Pollock, really good footballer and intelligent player to go with his strength. Still have high hopes for Byrne, like Brewer, I think he'll benefit hugely from being in the academy. Ringrose is obviously quality, can't wait to see what he'll be like in a year. He got criticised on Friday but I thought McCarthy has his best game. I don't see it with him and thought he had a fairly awful tournament but there was a glimmer of hope there and halfbacks are so hard to predict in terms of how they'll progress.
Anyone any idea who's taking over from Ruddock?

Re: Ireland u20 2013/14
Is Ruddock leaving the U20s?
I thought Brewer played well. He's a bit raw yet but has good skills and is big and strong. Should be interesting to see how he goes in the next year.
I thought Josh Murphy made a big impact near the end. He carried strongly and looks an athlete.

Yeah I've seen it mentioned in a few places that Ruddock is leaving, nothing official though.
Re: Ireland u20 2013/14
I'm late coming to this because I'm only watching the game now, but how did we score a penalty try against NZ?
Are the scrummaging laws changed for that level?

Who do people think would be most equipped to play Rabo in the not to distant future from this team?
Re: Ireland u20 2013/14
Taggart for Ulster.rugby_fan wrote:Who do people think would be most equipped to play Rabo in the not to distant future from this team?
Dooley for Leinster.
Molony for Leinster.
Jack O'Donoghue for Munster.
Kellegher for Leinster would be my picks.
The Connacht winger whose name I forget too.

All backs except Taggart and Dooley. Taggart came through the English system and looked like he has been training longer compared to most of the squad.
There are a few players like Sean O'Brien who might be ready for a few matches while others will need a few years.

Re: Ireland u20 2013/14
Few if any forwards are within an asses roar of Pro12. There's a big step between 20s and that level for a forward. Frankie Taggart and Jack O'Donoghue are possibilities for a 15-20min cameo as back-rows but very much doubt if any coach would try a front-five forward.

Re: Ireland u20 2013/14
Jack O Donoghue will definitely be ready some time this season and IMO could make his debut for the senior side in their pre season friendly in Waterford in August.dropkick wrote:Taggart, Dooley, Robb, Adam Byrne, Kelleher, Wootton, Goggin.rugby_fan wrote:Who do people think would be most equipped to play Rabo in the not to distant future from this team?

Taggart def has been in full time training for pro rugby longer. Academies get more access to players younger in England. Through his school Taggart was involved in academy set up of Harlequins.

JOD is still not even 100kg, at least two seasons away from being a regular with 1st team.

Who said regular with 1st team?goreyguy wrote:JOD is still not even 100kg, at least two seasons away from being a regular with 1st team.
I think he could def make Munster debut this season and could get game time in a pre season game considering Munster are playing in Waterford for first time ever
Re: Ireland u20 2013/14
Funny to think that of the 2012 team that beat SA, England and France, some players are only making the breakthrough now while others have hardly played a rabo game.

I didnt even notice that, copied the team from irfu site.
Re: Ireland u20 2013/14
I think Des Merrey is over playing in England with a university. Still can't work out how that guy has not picked up a pro contract anywhere.
Re: Ireland u20 2013/14
Was very impressed with him at under-20 level myself. In fairness there are a lot of good looseheads around at the moment though.Keith wrote:I think Des Merrey is over playing in England with a university. Still can't work out how that guy has not picked up a pro contract anywhere.
In Leinster alone, we're lousy with them!
