WILLIE LE ROUX (South Africa)
A strong and elusive runner from full-back, Willie le Roux has started all 10 of South Africa’s Tests in 2014 to take his tally to 22 Tests since his debut against Italy in June 2013. The 25-year-old, who has scored seven Test tries, is strong under the high ball and is potentially the most exciting South Africa outside back to come onto the scene since Bryan Habana.

BRODIE RETALLICK (New Zealand)
A towering presence in the lineout, Brodie Retallick’s partnership with Sam Whitelock makes arguably the best second row in world rugby at present. The 23-year-old’s powerful runs and work-rate across the pitch have brought him to the fore in 2014. An IRB Junior World Championship winner in 2011, Retallick has 35 Tests and one try – against South Africa in the 2013 Rugby Championship – to his name.

JULIAN SAVEA (New Zealand)
With a try-scoring rate that few can match, Julian Savea has inevitably drawn comparisons with legendary All Black wing Jonah Lomu this year. The 24-year-old has scored 10 tries in 2014, including a hat-trick against England in the third Test in June, to take his tally to 29 tries in just 31 Tests. Savea was named the IRB Junior Player of the Year in 2010 after helping New Zealand win a third successive IRB Junior World Championship title.

JONATHAN SEXTON (Ireland)
The oldest of the nominees at 29, Jonathan Sexton has been the stand-out player for Ireland in 2014 as they claimed the Six Nations title, a first series win in Argentina in June and the scalp of South Africa in Dublin last weekend. His control of the game at fly-half and perfect record from the kicking tee earned the 49-Test veteran the man of the match award against the Springboks.

DUANE VERMEULEN (South Africa)
A classic South African number 8, Duane Vermeulen has won plaudits across the world in 2014 for his work at the breakdown, power in the tackle and his destructive ball carrying. With 26 Tests to his name, the 28-year-old was named man of the man in South Africa’s 27-25 victory over world champions New Zealand in October with his battle with Kieran Read worth the admission price alone.
IRB Chairman Bernard Lapasset said: “The IRB World Rugby Player of the Year is one of the most prestigious accolades in Rugby and previous winners have all made a significant contribution to the international Game over the past decade, inspiring new generations of players and fans.

“All of these nominees have enjoyed stellar years and the focus on who will claim this accolade will add an extra dimension to the remaining November Tests.”

The IRB World Rugby Player of the Year 2014 nominees were selected by the independent IRB Awards panel, chaired by Australia’s Rugby World Cup 1999 winning captain John Eales.

The panel, comprising Will Greenwood, Gavin Hastings, Raphaël Ibanez, Francois Pienaar, Agustín Pichot, Scott Quinnell, Tana Umaga and Paul Wallace, has deliberated on every major Test played in 2014, starting with the RBS Six Nations and culminating with the November internationals.

“As always the panellists’ independent deliberations have produced a worthy list of contenders among a strong field. It has been a year where we have seen a levelling in competition with an unpredictability in so many games now. With a spread of a couple of outside backs, a fly-half, a back-rower and a lock in contention it is not going to be an easy selection to determine the Player of the Year,” said Eales.

In support of the initial nomination process, fans now have the chance to have their say on the shortlist via social media. The results of the public vote will be considered by the panel when finalising the winner.

Previous winners include Kieran Read, Dan Carter, Thierry Dusautoir, Shane Williams, Bryan Habana, Schalk Burger, Jonny Wilkinson and Richie McCaw with the two All Black centurions the only players to have won the award on more than one occasion.

The IRB World Rugby Player of the Year is one of 12 categories of awards, including the IRB World Rugby Coach of the Year, IRB World Rugby Team of the Year, IRB Women’s Player of the Year, IRB Sevens Player of the Year in association with HSBC, IRB Women’s Sevens Player of the Year and IRB Junior Player of the Year.

An indictment of this award is that it's duration since inception largely coincided with BOD's career and yet he never won it; 2009 being an obvious and glaring omission.

Richie McCaw had one of his least successful years in 2009 with Canterbury and New Zealand and missed part of the year through injury.
South Africa beat New Zealand 3 times and France beat them as well. The Bulls also beat Canterbury in the semi finals so when was he so dominant?
BOD on the other hand was hugely influential with Leinster (Hcup), Ireland (Grand Slam) and the Lions (he was excellent on tour)
Total joke of a decision.

If he's lost to Fourie Du Preez, it would have been fair enough, he'd also had an outstanding year. But McCaw winning was a joke

Agreed but in 2008 McCaw got robbed blind of the award himself.

I remember my brother in law telling me he bumped into Keith Wood who was on the panel in 2009 and Wood joked to him that they would surely get BOD over the line that year, yet it did not happen. You would wonder do the 5 get picked from the year but on the day of actually deciding is it just whoever had a good game last week type of thing. It certainly is a bitter pill to swallow as a fan that BOD did not get it that year.

It's only appearances in international matches that count towards this award, so HEC form wouldn't count towards anything.

lets not start the whole debate again. It was a dreadful decision to pick McCaw over O'Driscoll AND DuPreez.

Sexton is the token NH rep. He won't- and truthfully doesn't deserve to win. But then again, neither did McCaw in 2009. So who knows...?

Have to say I think Conor Murray is very unlucky not to be on this list. He's been the best Irish player this year for me.

I'd probably narrow it down to Retallick or Vermuelen. I would say that both Savea and Le Roux were better last year. Sexton has been very good but I still don't feel like he's run games the way he did for Leinster at our peak, not consistently anyway.

Retallick would probably be my choice, though Savea is the prime finisher for the best team on the planet.

Savea by miles, rest are a joke.

Also fan voting is stupid. Get proper experts (not just moron ex players, some of you lot on here are more expert than some of them), pay them well to do the job diligently and pick a winner based on their expertise. I hope the panel simply ignores the fan poll. Otherwise, don't bother.

All five players have had exceptional seasons and are hugely talented to begin with. Saying that four of them are 'a joke' is bizarre.

Mike Brown is very unlucky not to get a nomination – Man of the Match in three Six Nations games and Six Nations player of the tournament. Two out of his three performances in NZ over the summer were pretty sharp as well.

I always feel that the NH nominees get a little shortchanged by playing their competitive test rugby [i.e. the Six Nations] 8-9 months before the nominations are announced. They just get forgotten a little bit.

Delighted for Sexton to get the nomination, well worth his place on the list.

Vermeulen especially...complete waste of space

Didnt panel of experts voting lead to McCaw getting it ahead of BOD despite missing half a season
