Help please!

Post by Brizzle_fan »

Hi all,

England fan from Bristol in peace! We are coming out for the game on Sunday, fly out early tmrw and looking for somewhere to call home for the afternoon and watch the other two 6 nations games. We are staying by the 3 arena and although I've been to Dublin a few times, it's never been for rugby.

I'm guessing we are better off avoiding temple bar area if we're looking for a decent rugby pub with a warm welcome? Do we head out towards Ballsbridge and the Aviva?

Any help / suggestions will be gratefully received!

Good luck to Leinster for the season and here's hoping for a cracker on Sunday!! :D

Hi Brizzle. Hope you have a great weekend.

Yea avoid Temple Bar, its not that you wouldn't get a welcome reception it's just there are better places to go. Smellysocks above is right about Donnybrook and its a short taxi ride from where you are staying or a long walk. Ballsbridge is also good as are the pubs near the Aviva if you want to get to know the area in preparation for Sunday. If you want to stay in the city centre (if wives are travelling they might want to shop) try some of the streets of Grafton St such as Duke Street where there are some decent pubs. Also Baggot Street used to be a great place for pubs to watch the match in but the one thing you can be certain of in Dublin is finding a decent pub so enjoy.

Should be decent craic in Donnybrook alright with the Legends match going on tomorrow evening, or you could venture a little further since you will have to taxi anyway (less then 5mins further) and try Ranelagh. There are loads of pubs you can set up base in and then stroll from one to the other later, lots of restaurants as well, a couple of the bars open till 2-2.30 in the morning, it is a good area with a friendly crowd and within a couple of mins taxi to Leeson Street if you are still able for more.

Within walking distance from the 3 Arena this weekend is a Craft Beer Festival in the Convention Centre, not sure if it is your thing I presume they will be showing the rugby but it might not be their priority but you could send them a mail.

There'll be a groan from the purists but Kielys in Donnybrook will have multiple screens showing all games, it is a rugby pub through and through and it's far enough away from the Aviva to escape the throng. You won't be the only ones in white either. Pubs don't open 'til 12.30 on Sunday BTW.

Actually Doonybrook is not what it was - Kielys can be very quiet these days but on the plus side does reasonable food and is set up to show games - no chance of having to persuade them to put the games on :D

The old Longs pub in Donnybrook (now called Athur Mayne's) is not so great for watching games - the whole set up is almost restaurant-ish. However they have some good food - ideal spot for a bite to eat if you were thinking of going to the Legends game in Donnybrook(http://www.irishrugby.ie/irfu/charitable/3301.php) - which looks fun and a decent warm up for the next day.

If you weren't going to that, I don't think I'd suggest going to Donnybrook. Ballsbridge has a series of pubs - including "The Bridge" (owned by some of the Leinster team) - but it is a little suburban (though not far out). Slightly closer to town but still close by the Aviva (actually down the other end of the stadium - so handy to scout out for the next day) are a group of three pubs together - Beggars Bush pub, Slatterys (http://www.slatterysd4.ie/) and The Chop House (http://thechophouse.ie/). Heard the food at The Chop House is great.

A short walk up (10 mins?) from Slatterys is Upper Baggot Street - again slightly out from the centre but that's not a bad thing. This are will also be hopping before and after the game so you can scout out a few spots - The 51 Bar (http://www.the51bar.ie), Waterloo Bar (http://www.thewaterloobar.ie/). All of these are classic rugby pubs btw

Ranelagh as mentioned has quite a lot of pubs and places to eat - google maps will give you all the places - don't think you could go wrong and even if you did you can walk out of one pub and into the next

However if you are looking to stay central and want to avoid taxis - i would start at Grafton Street and pubs off Grafton Street (tend to be tradtional well known pubs around here) - obvious ones are Kehoes (http://www.dublinks.com/dublin-pubs-bars/kehoes-pub.php), McDaids (http://publin.ie/2011/mcdaids-2/), The Old Stand (http://www.theoldstandpub.com/), O'Neills (http://www.oneillsbar.com/) .... these are all within 5 mins of each other and I have left out dozens. Every person you ask will have a different list of names for pubs around Grafton St - you could just wander the little streets off Grafton St and drop into one that catches your eye

If you wanted to be adventurous and walk a further 10 mins, there are pubs like The Long Hall, The Stag's Head, O'Donoghue's, Doheny & Nesbit (google them) which are all favourites for folk. You may want to just pick an area of town that suits you and find yourself a local pub there - so Donnybrook if you want to go to the Legends game on Sat, Ballsbridge or Beggars Bush if you want to hang out close to the stadium or one of the other areas if you want to just wander around

Hope it helps - and cue everyone nit-picking the particular pubs I mentioned :D

If you're out in Donnybrook tomorrow evening, why not pick up some tickets for the Ireland vs England Legends match in Donnybrook

http://www.irishrugby.ie/ireland/33718.php#.VPB1dFO-uHk

Always a good laugh and some genuinely great players taking the field - then down to Kielys afterwards for a feast of pints

Excellent stuff Doc. Not a dud pub or bit of advice there. We are fairly lucky to have it all within walking distance.

Hey, hopefully this is the right page to post this question; anyone know of trustworthy sites for torrent downloads of games? Have had to come back from Spain for my girlfriend's 30th, which involves flying out as the second half is kicking off on Sunday. Sickner. Any suggestions much appreciated.

The best place to be looking is Across The Tasman but you need to be invited. Unfortunately I don't have any invites available at the moment but maybe one of the lads here could help you out?
