Whats our previous best finish in u20 rwc?
Beaten semi-finalists. We were beaten finalists in the U21 World Cup back in 2004 [Jamie Heaslip's year].
And winners in 1998 when it was U19s (BOD's year)

Any videos of the sending off? World Rugby didn't include it in their highlights.

For what its worth was like Callum Clarks from a few years ago. Was a half hearted charge/entry into maul but led upwards with his head and made deliberate contact

Cheers Hugo & Xan, will have to look up that 2004 team

@FWS and theyre missing comfortably their best ten

A cheap dirty nasty shot. They were well beaten and the pr!ck decided he was going to be the hard man. I hope he gets what he deserves .
Ref handled the incident very capably.

Couldn't see a number but didn't their lock throw a punch when the maul collapsed?

.
Harry Malinder at 10 is a serious prospect with Saints experience both domestically and in Europe under his belt.About 15 first team appearances this season usually in centre or at full back and at 6 feet 4 is quite big for a 10

Yes, we beat them in Newcastle in the 6N in a somewhat crazy game. However, they had a 2nd row Red carded which made it possible for Ireland to close out the game.

Three of their current were not available (Mallinder being one) because of Premiership call-ups.

The Irish Squad that night was:
15. Jack Power (Leinster) - injured for JWC
14. Hugo Keenan (L)
13. Shane Daly (M)
12. Jimmy O'Brien ( L)
11. Conor O'Brien (L)
10. Johnny McPhillips (U)
9. Stephens Kerins (C)
1. Andrew Porter (L) ~ 6'1", 118kg
2. Andy McBirney (U) ~ 6'0" , 100kg
3. Conan O'Donnell (C) - injured for JWC ~ 5'10", 112kg
4. Peter Claffey (C) - injured for JWC, 6'8", 119 kg
5. James Ryan L) Capt. ~ 6'8", 108kg
6. Cillan Gallagher (C) - INJURED DURING JWC ~ 6'5", 111kg
7. Will Connors (L) -injured for JWC ~ 6'5", 100kg
8. Greg Jones (L) ~ 6'5", 107kg

Bench
16. Shane Fenton (Young Mun / Munster)
17. James Bollard (L) ~ 5'11", 111kg
18. Ben Betts (M) ~ 6'2",110kg
19. Sean O'Connor (M) ~ 6'5", 106kg
20. Kelvin Brown (M) ~ 6'1", 104kg
21. John Poland (M)
22. Brett Connan (Exiles)
23. Matt Byrne (L)

Unavailable on 26th February v England
Max Deegan - injured ~ 6'4", 108kg
John Foley - Munster flanker
Conor Kenny - (C) -THP INJURED IN JWC ~ 6'0", 133kg
Sam Arnold - required by Ulster (centre)
Jacob Stockdale - required by Ulster - wing / FB
Robert Lyttle - required by Ulster - wing

Greg Jones and Ben Betts were capped against England and Stephen Kerins was getting his first start.

For the JWC Squad there were 5 new caps named:

Bill Johnson - Munster OH injured throughout 6N
Vakh Adaladze - Leinster THP replaying injured O'Donnell
Evan Mintern - Munster 2nd row replacing injured Claffey
Vincent O'Brien - Munster Hooker who had big season with Cork Con
David Aspill - Leinster Flanker replacing Will Connor injured

England won only one game in the 6N Tournament (against Italy), their worst performance for a decade.

Irish forwards height and weight has been included purely to illustrate what a big pack this is (by Irish standards). Interestingly, but unconnected to their size, this is the first Irish Squad of the Professional rugby era, all players having been born after 1st January 1996.

Thought the Irish players responded well. No one kicked off or looked for revenge. Young players are used to in game citing.

Really good discipline.

Regardless of how they do against England this has been the best under 20 side we've produced, at least since the change of tournament age range.

I've been following the 20s from overseas without getting to see their matches due to time zone differences.
Every year they seem to improve between the 6N and the WC and every year seems to have its own collection of heralded stars (Ryan,Roddick, Butler back row side, Ross Byrne and Nick McCarthy half back combo) but usually after one or two big performances against big opposition we get fairly well beaten by a bigger nation.
What makes this year different?

It seems to me that we have less big name players in this year's squad than previously and we certainly didn't fancy our chances of progressing from the group, let alone making the final.
We often talk about which of the individual players will make the step up to Pro Rugby.
What can we learn about this group as a collective and what will their contribution be to Irish Rugby?
Noel Reid and James Rodriguez were separated at birth.

This is a special group. Pre-tournament I thought it was just the forwards, but the entire squad has been excellent. I don't know what you can learn specifically for the future, but this is a game well worth winning. Not just to win the cup this year, but the winners are liable to get a significantly more comfortable draw next year (avoid the kiwis). I'm all for putting development first and don't measure success purely in trophies. But let's win this one.

He's been immense but I thought Ryan should be on the shortlist as well.
