IMO JOD is a utility backrower like Murphy and his strength/likelihood of making squads and matchday squads is based on his versatility; Conan is a better 8, Leavy is a better 7, Ruddock is a better 6 but JOD can cover all 3

know its the peril of official listings but 6'2 and 97kg seems too small to be a serious international no8, which brings us to the old problem/question of whether versatility can sometimes be a hindrance, but size for an international 8 is the only criticism AT ALL I could have of him

Does anyone know the story with Rhys Ruddock? Is it just match fitness keeping him out?

I'd say so. He's been out injured and only played about 20 minutes from the bench against Zebre.

Just to whet the appetite, here's a thread from the Rugby Canada website which summarises their key players who are playing in Europe. It's certainly not a bundle of laughs for them on the injury front and there's a good few familiar faces we won't be seeing on Saturday.

The Full Canadian Squad announcement and details:

LANGFORD: 27 October 2016 — Canada’s senior men’s head coach Mark Anscombe has named a 28-man squad for next month’s test matches against Ireland, Romania and Samoa.

The squad features a wealth of experience but also a blend of youth including Admir Cejvanovic, Ben LeSage and Conor Keys who could all earn their first test caps on tour. Brett Beukeboom, Connor Braid, Phil Mack, Conor Trainor and DTH van der Merwe also rejoin the squad having not featured for Canada since last year’s Rugby World Cup.

Furthermore, 18 players return from Anscombe’s June RISEAsOne Summer Series squad in Kyle Baillie, Ray Barkwill, Nick Blevins, Aaron Carpenter, Matt Evans, Ciaran Hearn, Matt Heaton, Eric Howard, Jake Ilnicki, LeSage, Gordon McRorie, Evan Olmstead, Pat Parfrey, Taylor Paris, Lucas Rumball, Djustice Sears-Duru, Brock Staller and Matt Tierney. Rob Brouwer, Ryan Kotlewski and Clay Panga make up the rest of the squad.

“We’ve picked the best squad we can from the players available,” Anscombe said. “It’s unfortunate we’ve still got some guys out injured but we’ve brought back some quality players.”

Canada, ranked 18th in the world, will face sixth ranked Ireland at the Aviva Stadium on Nov. 12 before tackling 16th ranked Romania a week later in Bucharest. Canada concludes its tour against 14th ranked Samoa on Nov. 25 in Grenoble, France.

“Theses games are extremely vital,” Anscombe said. “We’re playing a Tier 1 nation in Dublin in front of a full house and we don’t get to do that very often so it’s a great opportunity for the guys to show what they are capable of. With ranking points on the line, the other two games are critical if we want to move up in the world rankings.”

Canada last faced Ireland at the 2015 Rugby World Cup with the Irish prevailing 50-7. Canada is 0-6-1 all-time against Ireland. At the same tournament, Canada were narrowly beaten 17-15 by Romania and have claimed victory in two of their six previous encounters.

Canada were also denied a win against Samoa last year as part of the Pacific Nations Cup as the visitors scored a last gasp try to steal a 21-20 win at BMO Field in Toronto. Canada has never beaten Samoa in five attempts.

The November tour continues what has been a busy 2016 for Canada’s senior men’s team. After playing five games in the inaugural Americas Rugby Championship, Canada played three tests against Japan, Russia and Italy as part of the RISEAsOne Summer Series. A Canada ‘A’ team then tackled the Doncaster Knights, Ulster and the Glasgow Warriors in an August tour before playing three games as part of the Americas Pacific Challenge in Uruguay earlier this month.

Broadcast details for all three games are still to be confirmed.

Kind of heard nothing about JOD this year which after such an impressive debut season is disappointing.

Thornley has the same 23 (well he has the same 22 and one typo) but he has Henderson starting with Holland on the bench. His typo is having Jack McGrath as the replacement scrum-half.

Hard to get up for this game, after last week and also because we will murder them.

I love seeing tier 2 and 3 nations get their tilt and a few quid, but I can't see this game being even slightly close. Maaaaaybe if they all go on solo missions to try to be noticed for NZ2 and Oz, but that would be so counterproductive I can't see it in any way.

I'm really looking forward to it. I know it shouldn't be a great test but you've got Healy, Cronin, Dillane, Henderson, POM, and SOB all fighting to get a shot at the All Blacks next week (either to start or just get in the squad) and then Ringrose making his debut and a few other new caps as well.

I can only imagine how annoyed POM, SOB, and Henderson are that they missed out last weekend, they must be straining at the leash. Hopefully the fact that we'll be putting a new team out will mean we keep a good level of intensity too.

There'll be a great vibe around the place - everyone will be up after last weekend, and probably half cut as its on quite late, it'll be an exciting team and there'll be tries aplenty. The game mightn't be Citizen Kane, but theres nothing wrong with a bit of Die Hard.

I feel like that's very insulting to Die Hard and warrants a banning.
