Colin Meads R.I.P.

Post by hugonaut »

Colin Meads died today at the age of 81. One of the greatest ever rugby players, a true legend of the game. May he rest in peace.

RIP Colin Meads. For the elder lemons, he was the benchmark of hard forwards. Think Brad Thorn and elevate. Played with his brother on NZ team of 50's and 60's and he survived to the 70's, by then in his mid30's. Had his biography beside my bed during my playing career and every chapter gave examples of how hard you had to work and how hard you had to play, to be successful.

We saw him here in 1963 but missed seeing him at his prime with Fred Allan's 1967 team, due to foot and mouth. He was hard and uncompromising, sometimes OTT.

More than anything he gave meaning to the expression "A Legend". RIP.

I'm not quite old enough to have seen him in action, but my dad certainly hated him!
