Ken Catchpole R.I.P

One of the true legends of the game and probably the best all-round scrum halves has passed away at 78. Even old grainy TV footage can’t disguise his greatness. He’d have taken to the professional game like a duck to water. RIP

The original TV scrum-half pin-up. There was nobody with a smoother, quicker or longer pass in the '60's and early '70's. He gave out-halves all over the world the excuse that they "weren't playing outside Catchpole". And because we had seen it on TV or in a Newsreel, we knew it was a reasonable answer.

Before my time. Finished playing in 1968.The way I heard it Meads deliberately twisted his leg when he was trapped under a ruck. Finished his career.

Catchpole was the purists SH.

Mead’s was a nasty piece of work- if a great player. I’d say he wasn’t too bothered, at best, on who he hurt.

Despite the adulation afforded to Colin Meads in NZ he was a thug as were many of his contemporaries, such was the ambience of rugby at the time.
