Charlie Ryan returns from last years squad where he got 5 caps, all off the bench, he is the most physically imposing of the locks named in teh squad and looks very likely to be 1st choice TH lock. Past that Ryan Baird and Niall Murray are both superb athletes for the position, with Murray lining up at 6 during warmup games over Christmas. JJ McKee looks most likely to backup Ryan at TH lock and has emerged this season after not featuring in Ireland squads at a younger age. Two locks who will be eligible again next season are named in the squad, Paddy Kelly is a physically imposing lock who could surprise at TH lock if given a chance, while Brian Deeny fits more in the athletic lock mold, with previous experience at 7's rugby and in the backrow.

Scott Penny has surprised everyone this season with 3 senior starts for Leinster and if released will be the likely starting openside for the 20's. Below him John Hodnett and Martin Moloney looks the most likely players to play 7 for the 20's. Although both have experience at other positions, Hodnett at 8 and Moloney at 6. Azur Allison would be starting 8 if he could stay healthy, but he has been unable to do so this season, he is already confirmed to be missing the england game. Ronan Watters looks to be his obvious replacement at 8 or the previously mentioned Hodnett. David McCann could be an option at 8, but I think it more likely he plays 6 at this stage, although he is likely behind Niall Murray and others at the position.

Craig Casey who missed 14 months with knee injuries since leaving school, returns and looks set to get 1st shot against England after being named vice-captain. Seems to be highly thought of, but his size or lack there of remains a question. Cormac Foley played 12 last season for his school side, but lined up at 9 for Leinster. He started season strongly for St. Marys but only recently came back from an injury, he will be competing with Colm Reilly who has be a constant for Buccaneers and follows in the line of strong homegrown scrumhalves from Connacht.

The primary outhalves would appear to by Harry Byrne, who returns from last season, and Ben Healy, who led Glenstal to Munster Senior Cup glory last season. Both have featured in the AIL for their club and for their respective provinces A sides, Byrne looks set to start against England. The next three listed are all outhalves but look set to play other positions for the under-20's, David Hawkshaw who was named captain for the under-20's looks set to start at 12, while Jake Flannery and Bruce Houston appear set to compete for the fullback position, with Flannery likely to start there against England.

David Hawkshaw has been named captain and looks set to started at 12 for Ireland, while Sean French looks set to start at 13. Oli Morris is a new name that entered contention over Christmas, he seems to be primarily an outside centre. Stewart Moore has a big reputation, but looks set to miss the 6 nations due to concussion. It will be interesting to see who covers 12 if needed, it could possibly be another outhalf such as Houston or Flannery or they will bring someone in from outside the squad.

Of the Munster players I've seen..

Sean French. He certainly has the xfactor. Tall, fast, good kicking game and in schools rugby he seemed to come up with spectacular moments in every match creating and scoring tries.

Craig Casey. Very small but very talented. Good passer and kicker.

John Hodnett. I'm surprised he isn't in the Munster academy. He looks like a slightly shorter and faster Denis Leamy. Seems to have farmers strength and a low center of gravity.

Jonathan Wren. Smallish but very fast and elusive. Give him a bit of space and he could do damage.

Paddy Kelly. Your typical big tighthead lock that adds ballast to the pack. He's one of 3 Munster U19 locks who are in the 6'7/8 range. Eoin O'Connor scored against Leinster A the other week while Tom Ahern is in the academy but injured. Ireland U20s should have a good selection of locks next year.


I haven't seen too much of the others to comment.


I'm not sure about the scrum but from what I gather it looks a very good squad. The likes of Aaron O'Sullivan, Hawkshaw, Casey, Byrne, French, Wren are exciting players and I'm sure theres others who will add to the backline.

The pack have Milne, Penney etc. Looking forward to seeing Baird also.

As usual I expect England, France and even Wales and Italy too be more physically developed but hopefully the team puts in some good performances after last year.
