O'Sullivan Loses The Plot

Post by Duff Paddy »

I felt sick when I read this. :(
Eight players recalled for Ireland squad
05/02/2006 - 18:55:02

Head coach Eddie O’Sullivan has recalled eight players to Ireland’s training squad for next Saturday’s RBS Six Nations match against France in Paris.

The eight players – forwards Reggie Corrigan, Mick O’Driscoll, Anthony Foley and Neil Best, plus backs Denis Hickie, Girvan Dempsey, John Kelly and Barry Murphy – were all named in Ireland’s original Six Nations party but omitted from the squad which beat Italy yesterday.

O’Sullivan has no major injury concerns following the unconvincing 26-16 victory.

Lock Paul O’Connell has a bruised hip, and number eight Denis Leamy suffered a dead leg – but neither problem is serious enough to keep the players from training.
He's a madman. There is no other explanation. Foley, Corrigan, John Kelly and Barry Murphy? What drugs is he on?

As utterly outrageous as it may seem, here is the likely lineup for France next Saturday.

1 - Corrigan
2 - Best
3 - Hayes
4 - O'Connell
5 - O'Callaghan

6 - Leamy
7 - O'Connor
8 - Foley

9 - Stringer
10 - O'Gara

12 - O'Driscoll
13 - D'arcy (and what the fock was he doing attacking from 12 against Italy?)

11 - Hickie
14 - Horgan
15 - Murphy

France by 50.

the silver lining is that we're one game closer to having a new coach.

On current form we hope and pray. But who? There's not much depth within these waters!

If Foley plays I'd be seriously tempted to support France, people talk about his leadership but how many times has he been overlooked as Captain even in Munster they gave it to an aussie ahead of him, he never looks fit and his workrate around the paddock is quite poor, granted he provides a bit of grunt in the tight and around the fringes, but dynamic he certainly is not, Heaslip is the future and should have been blooded in the AI. After the week-end I'd go for a backrow of Wallace, O'Connor and Heaslip.

There are tons of options! We should sack EOS, no question, but assuming that the IRFU will not do this (happy to let him destroy the heart and soul of the sport in this country?), then we could mandate him to take on an assistant coach - just like they did to Gatland. There are plenty of options - Matt Williams knows our backs better than most, Nucifora still doesn't have a job, David Knox is a backs specialist who knows the players, Nick Mallett is available AFAIK - and that's off the top of my head. Advertise the job and see who's out there.

Williams and Gaffney are in the best position to take over at this late stage with less then 18 months to the next world cup

As it stands EOS is still our Backs Coach. So the buck stops with him. I'd have no problem hiring any of the above (with the exception of Knoxy) as Backs Coach only, but I wouldn't trust any of them with replacing EOS.

Anyway unfortunately, getting our Backline moving is only one problem resolved. There are still serious questions regarding Eddy's selection criteria, attitudes to foreign based players, and ability to manage individual players.

First post on Leinsterfans, great to see it up and running.
Its an appalling selection that Carney aka EOS has made.

The illogical thought process of not having Foley even on the bench but having him start if/when Leamy is banned for the stamp. Just shows how daft the man is.

Bowe is not international standard, Hickie should be there or on the bench.

I don't know, I expect we will be thrashed by more than 30 on sat.

Depressing and frustrating :x :x

Easterby will get his last cap on Saturday, as will MOK unless he pulls one out of the bag. As with the original selection before the Italy match, when I was not too dissapointed, its just the idea that EOS has Neil Best and Foley ahead of Heaslip, Jennings and Gleeson in ther pecking order that is annoying, so that when Easterby gets dropped after Staurday, Neil Best is in........instead of Leamy at 6, Gleeson at 7 and Heaslip at 8!!!!

I'd have no problem with Best playing. One of the form flankers in Ireland this year, very aggressive and has a good all round game.

But holy moly, Wallace at 6 ..Foley or being provincial about it Heaslip and then Gleeson at 7. That would be in a non EOS world though.

Why? Did you honestly think he was going to change it?

There's nothing wrong with the team. The tactics have to be executed better but apart from some marginal calls I really can't see the issue. It's clear that he trained this team last week to play France this week. Why would he change midstream after a win? We were technically very good once Flannery got his throwing sorted out. We cleared our lines well and by and large our defensive lines worked well. We even made some good inroads in the 2nd half only to be thwarted by a ref who refused to yellow card any Italians for persistent infringing.

And finally, when have we ever impressed against Italy? First match up. Lack of gelling. One of the criticism of the Lions was that they didn't play their 1st choice team together before the first test. Why would we change a team that's now had a good 80 minutes of matchtime together?

I would have thought that the obvious weaknesses would have caused at least a couple of changes. The completely unbalanced back-row is a serious cause for concern and was at least partially responsible for the concession of a try last saturday. The inability of the scrum half to break, thus putting further pressure on the outhalf is another serious issue that nothing has been done about for the last two years. And finally the total absense of anything even vaguely resembling his club form from the full back begs the question, if we put up with his weaknesses in defense to benefit from his attacking nous, and then hes not attacking, is he not just a poor international full back?

Dave, my point is why are you still in shock from this team announcement? He was never going to change it. He's clearly been training for the French match and even played the game as if we were playing against the French (e.g. we didn't really need the elaborate clearing of our lines against Italy but we will against France) and I imagine that just like I think Leinster did against Glasgow we trained closer to match day than we will this week thus explaining some lethargy.

On Murphy, he's not playing FB much for Leicester so I'm not sure what FB form you're talking about. Yes, I'd argue he isn't a great international FB but he clearly doesn't see Dempsey there for the WC so he's persisting with Murphy in the hope that the experience will make him a better FB. And he was excellent for us in that position in 2003.

The backrow argument was one to be had when the Italy team was picked, not today. I'd hope that he'll change it slightly for Wales but I'd disagree that it lacked balance. Again, the more the players play together the better they will become. Have some faith in the players if you're not going to have any in the coach.

CM - Honestly I take your point about the lads being trained right up until Friday in order to peak for France but I think you're grasping at straws - the same malaise was evident in the Autumn when he got humiliated by teh Kiwis and beaten by the worst touring Aussie side in memory.
