BT sport sponsoring Edinburgh and Glasgow

Post by dingodublin »

Part of me is very synical about this and it is more about hurting Sky and the pro12 rather than simple advertising technique.

They are sponsoring teams that they have no broadcast rights for. Is the long term plan to build them up in very decent outfits( I know Glasgow are already) and then lure them into new "BT super 14" league with the English teams in a year or 2. After all they couldn't really say no the hand that feeds them. Our league then naturally suffers (after Sky have bought in) and the H cup is a dead duck.

Am I being paranoid?

Has this anything to do with Leinster?

Maybe yes. Long term if we loose the Scots in the pro12, it will make the league less attractive and reduce revenues which will have an effect on Leinster. We need to keep the scots in our league for our benefit.

Its simply a bit of ambush marketing, nothing more. Sky are refusing to carry advertising for BT Sport, but as they are broadcasting the HEC and will be showing the Pro12 next season, its a way for BT Sport to get their brand on Skys air.

I'd imagine most of their games will be on red button only as a result.

It's quoted as being a 'multi-million' deal...

Small change for the exposure the size of BT is getting on Sky (and small compared to their peers).

If you consider that Glasgow couldn't even get a sponsor last year I don't think they'll be complaining. Seems like a win-win for both sides. Glasgow have also nearly sold out there season tickets goal for this year which is a huge fillip for them. It means more money coming in making them more competitive off the field which has to be good for the Pro 12 League and Scottish Rugby.

BT could cover the Scottish Rabo home games. The rights wouldn't be hard to get. The Scots are one of the worst affected by the HC problems, so this placates the SRU somewhat.
