NFL Players in rugby

Post by RavenhillRaider »

Can they transition to 15s? 7s would be easier to start with, but seems Saracens and Quins are look for players. With the help of eddie.
Saracens and Harlequins will join a number of Europe's top clubs who will run the rule over a trial taking place in America next month which will consist of American football players who are keen to give rugby a try.

The trial will take place at the Minnesota Vikings' home on April 5 and 6 with over 180 athletes set to attend, according to the Telegraph. Saracens' Hayden Smith recently left rugby temporarily to give NFL a go and ex-Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan, who is helping to oversee the two-day trial, has tipped a number of players to make the grade.

"Some of these guys are extraordinary athletes who have either just missed out on the NFL draft by a whisker or have played in the NFL and have been cut but want to continue as professional athletes," O'Sullivan told the newspaper.

"The majority of them are not rugby players but having played at such a high level of American football, they are very easy to coach and will adapt very quickly. The players will be put through physical testing and then rugby skills and then the clubs can decide whether or not they want to sign any of them.

"Saracens are already sending a scout over and Harlequins are also very interested as are French side Grenoble. We expect others to come too."

Don't know much about the game but some of the players are incredible athletes and built like brick shithouses.

The yanks' enthusiasm may wane once they discover they don't get to trot to the sidelines for a drink and a breather after every play

hassler at the ospreys is an ex running back from Canadian football. I'm guessing wing position would be the easiest to pick up, if your fast strong elusive runner plus decent handling skills you have half a chance, running backs and wide receivers also require these skills so there is a lot of cross overs here.

Not sure you can expect to pick up many players for any other positions . If your 20 and have never played the game before your going to struggle to pick up all the union is a technical aspects of the game.

Plus your going to struggle to get work permit, I'd rather take a look at some rugby league / nrl players who may not have quite made the grade

You could maybe convert Richie Incognito to prop. He sounds like a good guy to have in the dressing room ....
