Wilkinson to retire

Post by enby »

Jonny Wilkinson has announced that he will retire after the Top 14 Final. How appropriate that he and BOD will bow out on the same day. JW is that rare bird, an English player who is admired and respected by rugby fans outside of England. Apart from his place kicking, he will be remembered for some very solid defence and fine tactical kicking game. He seemed a very humble bloke without any of the arrogance of so many less talented players. His resilience in the face of multiple injuries was admirable although there were occasions when maybe he should not have played.

A fine player and having won a world cup he is entitled to be called a great of the modern game.

Very good player with incredible mental strength. Not sure if anyone could rival the latter quality! I wouldn't be surprised if he made an outstanding coach.

A class act. A shining example of professionalism on and off the field.

Best of luck to him in whatever he does.

I wish he will. He'll be our kicking coach next season. I guess he wants to suit in step by step cause, yeah, with Giteau, Michalak, Halfpenny, Armitage and O'Connor as kickers, he's not gonna have a lot to do.

In a gesture of his respect for Wilkinson, Boudjellal will ask the LNR [Ligue Nationale de Rugby] for permission to retire Toulon’s 10 jersey at the conclusion of the current campaign.
I hate this sort of sh!t!

Hopefully the french league will see some sense and not even give this any consideration.

We could give the 0 to Michalak, and the 100 to Halfpenny or Giteau.
Or 10'c0nn0r
Or 0110011001100010011011 if we can find a player named Bean Harry.
That could fill a scarf for geeks, good for business.

There are some pretty unsubstantiated rumours that he's a pretty decent fellow all told.

Won't the IRB have something to say about that? I thought there was a reg about numbering (and this forced the likes of Leicester to get rid of their lettering system). Maybe not though, just watching the hurricanes v chiefs and one player had a 26 on his back.

And we know how fun is the IRB, and how much protective they are when about the rugby values.
Unless they got their share of commercials incomes as well.

The double is a wonderful achievement for Toulon and wilkinson. A fitting end.
