Sorry dude, maybe 100 a years ago but Trinity has been trading on spent currency for as long as I've been alive. It has no reputation worth talking about in business, science, medicine, law or engineering. And now that it has closed down half of it's classics departments, it's really going down the shithole.
UCD graduates run this country in case you haven't realised.
That's utter tripe, based on tribalism and ignorance. Trinity has a good if not great reputation in business - as good as UCD anyway, while in all the other areas you've mentioned Trinity is better. In Arts and Humanities, Trinity is uncomparably better. The Classics thing is disappointing, but I wouldn't know where to start with Arts in UCD - anyone with half a brain could get in, whereas it's an achievement in itself to get into Trinity. The courses are more varied and the standard is higher in Trinity, due to the higher calibre of students (they need to be to get in).
UCD graduates run the country ALONG WITH Trinity graduates, which is hardly surprising seeing as you have 50% more people studying in the place at any given time. But don't obscure the facts - Trinity is the best and most prestigious university in the country and UCD is second. And everything I said in my last posts is true today, not 100 years ago.
You really don't know what you're talking about if you think that Trinity compares to UCD in Law, Science, Engineering or Medicine.
The only good point you've made is about Arts - but Orts in UCD is just a playground for the rich/thick southsiders, who don't really need to worry about getting a job cause they'll be sorted out by their daddy or social contacts.

I do think UCD wins on Affluence though - in my day 90% of first years were there for the roiding and the beer......
Trinity wins on baggy jumpers and Shinners however......
True about those league tables - I would have placed both universities higher than they are in them...for some of the UCD heads on this thread, please note that Trinity is higher (surprise surprise).
I know it's a bit of a Ross O'C-K joke about the UCD affluence thing, but I don't actually think UCD undergrads are any richer...some of them just like to flaunt it more.

I did ORTS in UCD. BA Hons Intl (French and Italian). Worked my focking tail off and when I compared notes with mates doing similar language degrees in TCD, they werent' covering half as much ground as the UCD languages/humanities departments.

Not sure. I went to UCD and did an MBA in the Rotterdam School of Management. Educational standards and teaching methods were like chalk and cheese.
That being said, I always wanted to go to that school that Felipe advertises but unfortunately I got a pretty good leaving......

INSEAD is the big one where I work - all our senior managers bar none did their MBAs there.
COMAD and NCAD, for those with the soul of an artist
Huh?? Didn't they sign up to the Good Friday Agreement? Or is this the continuity COMAD??

All the lads from all the big rugby schools go to UCD. Same for all the girls fee paying southside schools. Have a quick look at the CV's of the lads running all the big legal firms, banks, insurance companies, the top consultants, the top barristers, judges, the head of science foundation Ireland, all the Irish engineering companies...

I think you'll find I do know what I'm talking about. At least you've admitted what a joke Orts is in UCD, but what are you basing your convictions about those other areas on? It's simply untrue, and these myths are perpetrated by people are fairly bright/intelligent but can't take it that they didn't make the points to get into the best university in the country, and therefore compensate by telling everyone that UCD is better in the specialist area they studied.

CJ - I've got a Ph.D. and I've been in academia for 9 years now including my primary degree. If you got higher points than me in the leaving, then you're doing very well.

As an ORTS graduate, may I clarify what I think is a misapprehension here.
The ORTS faculty has something like 15000 first year places, all told. Thast's why points for it are lower than for similar courses in other Universities. It's a common failing of the system we have, that the higher the points, the "harder" the course. The only reason the Points system exists in its current format, is to keep numbers down to manageable levels within a faculty. for example, the intake of first year dental students into TCD is something like 80. They simply don't have the facilities or the expertise to take on any more students. Demand for the course is high, so it's filtered out by means of how many points you get. The highest points-scorer dictates the benchmark.
to say that ARTS is a hopeless or rubbish faculty at UCD, is facetious and un-informed.
The new horizons system at UCD has really transformed Orts at UCD from when my brother was there - he just lived it up then walked into a cushy job straight away. Life's a beach, hey.

That's your most inaccurate post yet Duffster. You look at the Trinity 1st XV, 2nd XV and under 20As, and you'll see that the majority were at Rock, Clongowes or Michaels, with a smaller mixture of good players from places like KH, Wesley etc. Your observation about the big legal firms is untrue - take a survey of the top 5 solicitor firms, and you'll see that it's a mixture, and the weighting of that mixture is obscured by the fact that many of the top TCD graduates end up in the City of London, making twice as much money as the top Irish solicitors do.
Take the top 5 London law firm I'll be doing my Training Contract with - I was looking at the future joiner list (people who will start their training contracts within the next 2 years), and there are 6 TCD under/postgrads there and 0 from UCD. This is typical.
