Anything with Hopkins is well worth a watch, I'm both pleased that Westworld is so good, but slightly disappointed that I've not had a chance to go back and watch Rome again

Bernard, ed Harris and poor James marsden, no?
They're interesting but not emotionally engaging - the contrast with the depth of the characters in GoT, which was apparent even very early in S1, is striking.
....and sorry OSS, Thandie Newton does nothing for me!

Westworld was amazing.
Was it? The incessent script doubling trick and the endless intrigues inside intrigues delivered complexity without, for me, depth. Another case of the Lost/Abrams malaise of scripts generating problems merely for the sake of it. If there is a real emotional core in this it is hidden beneath the frilly, brocaded, rococo levels of complexity. It's a fractal story.
I still like Maeve though, she could still be fun. Though I will not watch season two.
Spent the last few weeks rewatching the box sets of Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes. An example of how good television can be when it is given time and space to develop and grow. Really wonderful stuff.
Olivia Colman was great as ever, but thought the Hiddleston character was quite blank and Hugh Laurie was chewing any bit of scenery he could find.
Agree with that. Colman and Tom Hollander (Corky) were excellent. Hiddleston I find is blank in a lot of roles. Laurie was way overboard but I think he had to be like that to make up for some really odd bits of dialogue - lines that work well on paper but not on screen.
I'd recently watched High Rise when I saw that. So I couldn't quite figure him out as acting at all. It kind of looked like he was being awkward, shy, and good looking in weird situations.
"oh right, canibalism, feral gangs of children, drugs, rape, gun running, and shagging gangster's wives, plenty of murder. Gosh."
It was like watching early Hugh Grant (before casting people realised he was good at portraying total c**ts rather than jolly nice chaps).
