I can't get into mp3s and streaming - my perception is that the quality lacks depth, which may or may not be the case. I still buy all my music - mostly cds still as the Bang and Olufsen system in the car is way better than what I have at home, but I've been assembling a collection on lp over the years. I'm converting a room into a music room and when that's done I'm looking forward to getting in a killer turntable. When listening at home I have a lovely pair of Sennheiser infra-red headphones which give excellent sound quality.

Go for the newer version with detachable cable. ATH M50x.

M50s are closed with more bass/isolation. AD ATH 700s are open. Give a better reproduction but any ambient noise is clearly heard (sound goes in and out - thus open cans).

I can recommend both but there are many a good option in and around that price point so I would do a bit of research. There's a head-fi.org shootout of portable headphones that you should do a google search for.

Music related, but not an album review, but it appears Bruce Dickinson is expected to make a full recovery from cancer. Mercifully the tumour was discovered early and the treatment begun immediately. Bruce is/has been the singular most important person in my musical life (it's the area I have made my career in, and I doubt I would have had it not been for Bruce-led Iron Maiden) and I;d like to wish him a full, and speedy, recovery.

Waiting to see if Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica (apparently the album is unlikely to surface this year) and Slayer might tour their new albums this side of Christmas. Also hoping Xerath will put on that gig they keep promising

BRUCE DICKINSON UPDATE

We are very happy to announce that following his recent MRI Scan, Bruce was today officially given the all-clear by his specialists.

Bruce says,

“I would like to thank the fantastic medical team who have been treating me for the last few months, resulting in this amazing outcome. It’s been tough on my family and in many ways it was harder for them than me. I’d also like to send a heartfelt thanks to all our fans for their kind words and thoughts. I’m a firm believer in trying to maintain a positive attitude, and the encouragement from the global Maiden family meant a great deal to me. Right now, I’m feeling extremely motivated and can’t wait to get back to business as usual, as soon as I can!”

Rod Smallwood continues,

“We are of course all absolutely delighted that Bruce’s doctors have pronounced him free of cancer. Although Bruce is naturally eager to resume Maiden activities, it will take a while before he is completely back to full strength, as we explained previously. Because of this, the band will not be touring or playing any shows until next year. We know our fans will understand the situation and, like us, would prefer to wait until Bruce is back to his usual indefatigable levels of fitness before going out on the road.

For now, the focus will be on putting the finishing touches to the new Iron Maiden studio album and that is what we will be concentrating on over the coming weeks. The release however will definitely be this year. Meanwhile, I’d like to echo Bruce’s words and thank all Maiden fans. You have been incredibly patient, putting Bruce’s health and well-being first during this difficult time and the band and I appreciate all your positive support.”

I guess it depends what you're into.

Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall are all classics
The first five by Black Sabbath, Metallica and Iron Maiden are also all considered classics.
I'm no fan of our own U2, but October, War, Unforgettable fire and Joshua Tree was probably as good a consecutive output as most.
I also reckon you could include and four consecutive Miles Davis records from the earlier part of his time at Columbia (my favoured period of his) and I'll finish by offering you Sinatra from 68-70 with Cycles, My Way, A Man Alone and Watertown.
