Presumably everyone received their 'free gift' via iTunes this morning. All a bit meh to my ravaged ears - anyone actually think its good?

I like it. Couple of nice throwbacks to early stuff. It's better than I was expecting truth be told.

I also buy the occasional DVD. I bought Dredd on DVD in the hopes that it would encourage the financing of a sequel.

Some new stuff in rotation on the commute:

Royal Blood - "Royal Blood". Lots of hype around these guys for a while; album is very much standing up to the hype. Playing the Academy on Oct 27th.

Death from Above 1979 - "The Physical World". Follow up to the excellent "You're a Woman, I'm a Machine". Seems a little more coherent than that (which is a class album). Sticking to their "robot rock/dance punk" manifesto.

Interpol - "El Pintor". Lead single ("All the Rage Back Home") is one of the best they have produced ever; regarding the whole album, if you like their previous stuff you will like this. Not sure it will get them any new fans. Playing the Olympia for three nights in February.

Ryan Adams - "Ryan Adams". More of the same from Adams; still ponying up with Etah Johns as producer. Johnny Depp appears on a couple of tracks. Bit like Interpol int hat it won't win over any previous non-believers, but should satisfy existing fans.

Hamilton Leithauser - "Black Hours". This one is a gem of an album. First solo offering from the lead singer of The Walkmen (one of the mose underappreciated bands in my view, albeit highly rated). Getting high reviews, and deservedly so. It's a fantastic, buzzing album, and one of the best of the year in my view (although I am a huge fan of The Walkmen).
But don't take my word for it:

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/194 ... ack-hours/
http://www.avclub.com/review/walkmens-h ... cal-204989

Walter Martin - "We're all young together". A cousin of the aforementioned Mr. Leithauser, and member of the Walkmen this is a pretty unique offering. Composed in anticipation of the arrival of hisfirst born, it is fundamentally an album for children, featuring input from Matt Beringer (The National), Karen O (Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs) amongst other members of that Brooklyn scene. For anyone with young children who are sick of having to listen to nursery rhymes!

Finally, for anyone with newborns, Rockabye Baby is genius. Lullaby versions of 'serious' artists - well worth checking out the website: http://www.rockabyebabymusic.com/

Listened to it a couple of times so far and I like it. But I tend to be positively biased where U2 are concerned. I get the feeling I may be in a minority on that point

U2 are cr@p - Mrs Doubtfire especially.

The fact they're flogging their cr@p for free now - while hoovering up the shekels in the background from Apple - says it all really.

Check on my own iTunes and it shows up as purchased yet it's not in my music catalogue, strange. Not loosing any sleep over it but fancied a listen all the same just to see was it up to much.

You need to download it from the cloud. I wouldn't bother though.

Yep, you'll need to change the settings in Preferences/Store, but as domhnall says...

Xerath III released this week. Anything I;d write about the album wouldn't do it justice - suffice to say it's absolutely amazing. Consistent 9/10 reviews. Can't take it off repeat - it's my album of 2014 (thus far anyway) without a shadow of a doubt ...

The main discs on my platter this year were

St Vincent by St Vincent

Going Back Home by Wilko Johnson and Roger Daltry

Hendra by Ben Watt

The Cautionary Tales... by Eels

Accoustic Classics by Richard Thompson

Anima Rising by The Everlasting Yeah

Trouble in Paradise by La Roux

Would give the 'Davie' to La Roux, really great album.
