If you're up for a less structured holiday, a road trip can be great! We flew into Cairns (after 48hrs in Hong Kong which was pretty cool too!), and spent one night there before picking up a car and heading north to Port Douglas, Daintree rainforest and all that for a few days before heading south. We flew from Airlie Beach down to Sydney (we have family there), and toured around that area (including stopping off in the hunter valley - yum!) but if you have more time you could head further down the coast.
It's not for everyone, but we only had the first night's accommodation booked before we left and got fantastic deals in 4 or 5 star hotels and apartments on Wotif.com a day or two ahead of heading off to the next spot.

An alternative would be flying in to San Francisco and home from LA, either heading down the coast or inland to hit Lake Tahoe and maybe Vegas (with a bit of flying to cut out major drives) depending on how much time you have.

Have looked at about 6/7 and were down to 2 Bellinteer House and Ballymagarvey House. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of other locations or if they had weddings in these 2 locations, how did they fare?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Went with Ballymagarvey House...and recently tied the knot.
Have to say, an unbelievable place. Really special and lends to an amazing atmosphere.

We're looking at South Africa. Spend several days in Kruger, do the garden route and rest of time between Cape Town and wine country. A bit limited due to the time of year we're going. Northern hemisphere is cold and a lot of the tropics have significant rain fall/monsoons. India and Sri Lanka is also an option but S.A. is the leader currently.
Only perusing this thread now, so apologies for resurrecting it - especially if you've already booked.

If you're intent on SA, I;ve heard from three people that Shamwari Game Reserve in Port Elizabeth offers a similar safari experience to Kruger, but is far less busy and less 'touristy'. (In Kruger all of the animals are chipped, so you have situations where the guides ask what you want to see and drive you directly to where that animal is. If everyone else wants to see that animal at the same time, you're more likely to see other landrovers parked around a tree (as the case may be) than the animals themselves). From PE you can also go cage diving for sharks - if that's your thing - and/or go for a trip on the Blue Train which is rumoured to be worth every cent. Or rand.
* EDIT: on doing a quick search it appears the Blue Train no longer includes PE on its route. It may never have, of course, but I thought it used to go from PE through the mountains to Cape Town, but perhaps not.

Cape Town and its surroundings are wonderful, and a 'must see' whilst your there. Obviously there's table mountain - which is a 'wow' and there's a most pleasant walk across the top of it - and a visit to the Botanical Gardens at Kirstenbosch is well worth half a day of your holiday. Robben Island is also a 'must see' - but wrap up well, it can get a little chilly out there. I suspect you'd get a lot more out of that visit if you were to flick through Mandela's autobiography Long Walk to Freedom. Also from Cape Town you'd find it easy enough to get to Hermanus Bay and do a spot of whale watching - if you're lucky enough to be there while they're in the bay. An incredible sight, if you are! There's also Boulders Beach Penguin Colony, which I think is near Simonstown. Bring a clothes peg for your nose as penguins stink. Finally, ensure you include Stellenbosch as part of your tour of the wine region, as I have yet to visit a more beautiful place on earth.

On a slight tangent, a South African friend of mine always said the best safaris to be had are to be found in Botswana ...

Thanks, LoB. I've been speaking with travel agents and package specialists to pick their brains on S.A. and am starting to get a fairly good idea of what to expect and what we want. Am almost sure we'll drop Kruger at this point as it seems to only be of benefit if you're going to go deep into Kruger and spend a good spell of time up there. We just don't have enough time for that so one of the PE safaris is looking far more likely. From speaking with some SA nationals, we'll get as much enjoyment out of PE as we would Kruger as first time safari tourists.

Currently planning to start off with a few days in Camps Bay simply to relax and recover after the wedding then several days in Cape Town centre for tourist activity, few days out in wineland most likely based in Stellenbosch and then drive the Garden Route with overnights in Hermanus, Knysna and St. Francis Bay. Still tinkering but looking forward to it. Appreciate the information!

Sounds like you've got it mostly sorted. Camps Bay is gorgeous - lovely place to relax before you go galavanting. Hope you have a really great time

Key is just to not borrow to pay for what is a great party and all but essentially one day, it's like a holiday loan it's just a bad idea to borrow for things like these. Save and spend what you can afford I think is key.

I got married in Italy - June 2010, we invited 80 on the assumption that a max of 60% would be able to make it.
We ended up with 82! Go figure...

I know, just poking. Although I must admit when we were organising I was very much in the same camp of opinion as yourself.

In the main, I think it was down to the fact that we flagged it 2 yrs out and sent invitations quite early.

It turns out that Babbling Brook is 1 hr 57mins from my current location. On honeymoon in Napa...I would drive to see what Babbling Brook in Santa Cruz is like but I have been enjoying the vineyards a bit too much. Maybe tomorrow

Has anyone done Disneyworld in Florida and a fly-drive down to the Florida keys with a stop for a night or two in Miami. Looking into it for honeymoon and would love any hotel/theme park suggestions people might have for along that route.

I wouldn't bother moving into the center, Camps bay is class, nice beach there and also in clifton beside it. Its only about 10/15 mins taxi to places like the waterfront and long st if you want nights out in the city

Had our honeymoon in Florida, between Disneyworld, Universal Studios, the sun, the shopping etc it was brilliant. Not your typical honeymoon spot but was absolutely perfect.

We stayed in Orlando the whole time, split the trip into two (Universal and Disney) with the latter at the end. For that bit stayed at this place, christ I want to go back just typing this post :(

Highly recommend this place to book your theme park tickets http://www.attractionticketsdirect.ie/ (we went for one of the combo packs)

I thought Miami was a bit boring, other than a couple of Art Deco buildings and a beach it was just another American big city. But if you're thinking just a night or two it may be worth it just to say you've gone.
Get in the f%~king bag.
