Boat on the Shannon Stag?

Looking to organise a stag and was thinking about hiring boats/barges on the shannon. Anyone done this and could recommend places to go would be appreciated.44

Our rough plan would be to arrive Friday evening, night out somewhere not too far away, Then head out "boating" Saturday stopping off in a place or two for lunch/a pint. then mooring somewhere for the evening and a night out. Preferably not having too far to travel back on the sunday

There are a number of companies. I wouldn't recommend a barge though, they can be tricky. Shop around: Emerald Star, Castle Line, Shannon Sailing are the first ones that pop to mind.

There are some nice spots depending on which lake you pick. I'd know Derg better. Terryglass and Garrykennedy are very nice. Dromineer isn't bad. Scariff is a shithole but has nightclubs. Killaloe would be another option.

I was on one once taking in Belturbet and Ballyconnell. Boat was nice and was a pleasant enough way to spend a couple of days.
Wasn't involved in organisation so I've no idea of the company involved.

Carrickmines on Shannon is a good spot for stags and a location for boats.

Had a good time with a bunch of lads on the Carrick on Shannon to Athlone and back again lots of nice spots to pull into an berth for the night. You can get a pre-paid card to use showers in the marinas along the way. Strong Current when docking in Athlone so be on your guard and sober a u can be pulling in there. Good mix of night life in Athlone and a few nice little tasty restaurants and country pubs for a good mix on a stag. Emerald Star were the crowd we booked with, would highly recommend it. Bring plenty of rashers and sausages as well!!

Stick to the lower half of the lake IMO with Ballina-Killaloe, Garrykennedy, Dromineer all good options for places to stop. stops in Garrykennedy and Dromineer mean you're close enough to go out in Nenagh if ye wanted to.
Garrykennedy is nice with Larkins doing good food and is a decent enough pub. Ciss Ryans in Garrykennedy doesn't do food but more of the locals drink there. Excellent trad music in both pubs at weekend
You could start with going out in Limerick on the Friday and get taxi out to Killaloe. Getting boat Saturday morning in Killaloe and then travel up the lake to Garrykennedy.

Upper part with Lough Key Forest Park, near Boyle, Carrick on Shannon, Dromod, up to the Kilglass lakes, Rooskey, Tarmon down into Athlone is the way to go. Over to Glasson for a game of golf, the Hudson bay for the craic or Wineport if thats your thing.

Either way its a lovely way to spend a few days.

Actually this reminded me - if you get the boat around Carrick and go to Lough Key Forrest Park go do this - http://www.loughkey.ie/boda-borg/introduction.html. I think there is a mooring right beside the centre in the Park.

Doesn't look much on the website but it's brilliant. Essentially a couple of stories with 40 something rooms in it. Each room is a puzzle / challange under different categories. We did it with the kids and it cracked us up - mainly cause we were cr@p and couldn't work out any of them. But would go back in a flash.

Would be good for a group and handy if you wanted to spend a couple of hours out of the pub. Then tootle off to moor somewhere for the evening celbrations (Carrick not a bad option)

If you do end up stopping off in Athlone I can heartily recommend both Gertie Brownes and Sean's Bar for the pints(of Arthur in particular) and the Olive Grove and Left Bank as places to eat.
