OnePlus One phone

Post by The Doc »

Bit of a specialist topic this one....

If anyone on here has bought a OPO or otherwise has an invite to buy one that they can pass on - I'd be interested. Ideally looking for 64G model.

Thanks

Jaysus. You had me going there for a minute.

No removable battery killed it for me though. And the old cynical apple trick of no sd slot enabling them to charge you 60 bucks for an extra 48GB of storage. :(

I received an invite back in august but it's expired now. I'll forward one on if I get another.

Yeah - got over the removeable battery thing with my last phone. And pretty much the only phones doing that now are the Samsungs and can't believe that will last much longer - it adds to the thickness. OPO is supposed to have a decent battery life.

Likewise with the SD cards - I don't keep a huge amount on my phone - tend to use more cloud storage now as I have all-inclusive data here and the UK and some other places and otherwise use hotel WIFI when travelling

You get people hawking round mad external battery packs and phone cases with extra power that turn your already large phone into a monster.

The battery for an s4 or s5 is about half the size of a credit card and a cm thick. Sits in your arse. pocket with no hassle.

You may well get a day or more out of a new smartphone but wait til it's a year or 2 old.

Battery in arse. pocket means never having to use power saving or any nonsense like that and not having to be running round trying to find a socket to charge your phone pretty much ever.

If you forget to charge it overnight you can just slip in a fresh battery and stick the other one on charge before you head out.

SD card. If you don't need the space why are you looking for a 64GB Phone?

People point out that the internal phone storage is faster than an sd. Sure. but I only want to store stuff on it. Not fussed about speed over price.

Streaming media. Don't get me fecken started. You can't walk 100 yards listening to the radio without drop outs. Listen to a podcast while driving? ffs great if you don't mind waiting for buffering every few mins.

I download stuff before leaving then there are no interruptions. [/Rant]

I opted for the Sony xperia z2 instead of the OPO. Slightly smaller with a 5" screen, waterproof(although I'm not going to test that), easily a 2-day battery with a solid amount of usage, great build quality and really fast. It also has 32GB memory with space for a 128GB SD card.

If you don't need storage though and stream most things, I'd recommend the nexus 5. I've got one for work and it is excellent with the lollipop upgrade. I don't use it a great deal though except for emails and the odd call so battery life may be a concern as others in the office have griped about that before.

I have a Nexus 5 at the moment - had it for almost 2 years. It's fine and not much I would switch it for - but thinking of the OPO as I could pass my N5 onto one of the kids who probably needs a new one. A bit better battery would be useful but not a killer for me

I get that but only option for removeable battery is Samsung (I used to have them) but I hate the crapware Samsung put on the phone and the bastardisation of android that is TouchWhizz - much prefer the cleaner android install. I'm rarely in trouble these days - I just have a charger by my bed, in work and in my travel bags - also have USB cables in my work laptop bag. I also have work devices to be kept charged so I would still have to have the chargers with me

I'm not big on steraming - agree with you. I do listen to a lot of podcasts - which I download to phone rather than stream - again I travel a lot and so have them on the phone. When I get data (roaming or WIFI) the podcasts update. I also have a music library in Google Play - but again I don't stream - I save a portion of it locally on the phone.

The reason for 64G - the only choice is 16 or 64. The operating system is going to take 3 or 4 probably. I think 16 may be a bit light - doubt I'll ever need the full 64 - don't store video or lots of photos.

Yeah. I never use any of that chyte that they bundle in. Dunno what touchwiz is exactly despite being on my 2nd Samsung. Probably had a Samsung for almost 4 years now. I had HTCs before that which I preferred but..... You guessed it.... Battery.

Didn't realise Samsung were the only ones. Would prefer more control of what gets installed and the ability to delete chyte I don't use (which is 70% of it) but not interested enough to reformat the phone and go generic.

Yeah I do. Was able to watch Leinster v Munster in the Celtic league final 2001 on the plane to Castres and Northampton v Leinster on the way back. :)

Like to keep a fair few photos and music too. Don't use any online storage for any of that. Hate systems that try to force you to do so. Like Apple :)

Andriod isn't forced but certainly Google is "offering" it - having said that - if I change my phone, once I log into the google account all my contacts, podcasts, music and anything else local gets updated automatically - even down to restoring where I had stopped listening to a podcast (but that is the podcatcher I use rather than google) - which is useful
