Might I suggest that links in post be set to open in new windows rather that navigating users away from the forum. Basically what I mean is in an 'a' tag, setting the target to be _blank.
What was your reasoning for changing?

the "target" attribute is not part of the XHTML specification

There are ways around it, but it's like searching for a needle in a haystack and I don't have the time at the moment.

Sure people can always just right click on the link and select 'Open in New Window' anyway.

In browsers with tabs (IE7, Firefox) using the middle mouse button (if you have one) causes links to be opened in a new tab.

On this laptop, clicking both buttons at the same time has the same effect as clicking a middle button.

Is CTRL+click not standard for IE/Firefox? Might not be, just though it was. Maybe it's only handy for those who prefer keyboard to mouse.
