How are there two Leinster U19s teams?

Post by bluerugbyrules »

Leinster have announced two U19s teams. See below. There used to be a U19s schools and U19s clubs (for lads from the previous years U18s youths and those previous U18s schools who have LEFT school). However this second one changed last year when they started picking guys for the 19s clubs side who were still in school and not or never a member of a club.

At the beginning of the summer a single training squad of about 60 players was named at Under 19 level. After a few weeks this was then divided into an A and B squad with separate training and coaching staff. About three weeks ago or so the A team went over to England and played Northampton Saints U19, losing 32-17. A week later the B team went over to London and beat the Exiles U19 by 20-17. Last Saturday both teams went to Thomond Park for the first of the Interprovincial series against Munster - the A team won 28-18 and the B team won 27-11. Next Sunday the A team play Connacht in Donnybrook at 3pm and the B team are hoping to play a club side as I think Connacht are only fielding one team at U19. On Saturday week both teams finish up with games against Ulster U19 again in Donnybrook.

Is the A team the 1st team and the B team the 2nd team?? or are they just mixed? Knowing a few players on the B team i would have thought they were very strong. Where does the Leinster schools U19s fit into all this. Are there now 3 Leisnter U19s teams?

The A team does appear to be the first team as they played each other several weeks ago and the A team won fairly comfortably. There has been some small movement of players since then and even after the weekend victories over Munster I think there might still be some more movement.

In answer to your other question, there is now NO Under 19 Schools team. I think this is a positive development to start mixing club and schools players.

On a more general point, given the recent results of the Leinster U18, U19 and U20 teams, you would have to say that Leinster are ahead of the other provinces when it comes to underage development, with Ulster in second place. To be fair to Ulster they could have beaten the Leinster U20 team last Friday in Ravenhill if they had made better use of all their possession and territory. Munster seem well off the pace at present and even their U18 Schools team lost to Connacht on Wednesday.
