There's a new show on MTV about high school football, makes the Leinster schools cups look like a grade c tag league.

ohio state (a university) have sold out their 100,000 all-seater purpose built stadium for the last four years for every home game. Makes the 6,000 season tickets leinster sold pale into insignificanceFatBoyChoice wrote:Yeah, they really love their highschool/college sport over there. Have you seen some of the stadia they play in? The amount of money available to them, particularly colleges is crazy, many of the college coaches make $2 millon+ a year. They must really milk all their rich alumni!

Most of the biggest college football teams would have stadia with 80K+ capacities. A lot of the funding would come from TV rights, college football is on a par with the pro game in terms of popularity as is basketball, especially when the "March madness" rolls around.tate wrote:ohio state (a university) have sold out their 100,000 all-seater purpose built stadium for the last four years for every home game. One of the main reasons high school and college football in America is because of the franchise system of many sports.
A franchise can be picked up and moved from state to state. Owners of teams get offers from cities to build stadia for them if they move their team to that particular state.
Whilst the high school and college teams have a tradition going back many years so they generate more interest.
You'll find one of the biggest supportted football teams is Notre Dame (college) and that the biggest/most viewed day in the Basketball season isn't even the playoffs but the so called "March Madness" where all the college games are on.
Friday Night lights is a great movie to! Brilliant sound track to, check it out.

This show is on MTV again now. It's called two a days. It's a fascinating programme - wonder if Irish schools rugby isn't going in this direction, especially now that Setanta are televising the matches.
Interesting feature every season watching schools matches is that people always comment that the players are looking very big for 17 year olds - well allowing for genetic/race differences - these guys are on a different level.

They may be huge, but having watched one program it's clear that few of them have any life outside football.Duff Paddy wrote:This show is on MTV again now. It's called two a days. Spent some time in Berkeley this summer where the college also has an 80k stadium or there abouts, there were only about 25k students in the college but the whole town gets behind the football team. All the shops sell the gear, their jerseys get made by Nike, huge posters (like 20 or 30 feet high) up on the stadium of the players, etc. I think college football is nearly as popular as the NFL.

It's far more popular .... particularly in places like Texas where EVERYBODY supports Texas A&M (the Aggies) or Texas state (Longhorns). Every shop is full of Longhorn merchandise and you're hard pressed to find any NFL gear.Danthefan wrote:Spent some time in Berkeley this summer where the college also has an 80k stadium or there abouts, there were only about 25k students in the college but the whole town gets behind the football team. I guess people feel the NFL franchises can always move - e.g. the Colts, Raiders etc... but the university teams will always stay put.
...to the sound of a Sivivatu slap!
it also depends how close the nearest NFL team is to them, for many people college football is effectively their local pro-team. LA, for example doesnt have a NFL team, so college teams fill that void.
