boyne came 2nd last in the north leinster league an the only reason skerries struggled in the league was they were all 5th years.

If you look at it in the here & now, the schools senior cup teams are stronger than their counterparts at club level. A recent example is Belvedere SCT beating Old Belvedere 20s at Christmas. (And this years Belvo SCT are not going to be champions that's for sure). Despite comments previously this is not about better coaching OR better facilities. It is for the following reasons.
1. The schools can build a team from age 13 without the coninuous turn over that clubs have. Schools have a captive squad. Clubs compete with all other sports / school activities & colleges (at 18s).
2. Schools have their players six days a week as opposed to 1 or 2 training sessions.
3. Schools have guaranteed godd opposition. The top club sides cannot get any one to play them in friendlies.
4. Schools get branch refs for every game, even friendlies. Clubs can get any joe bloggs for even a league game.
5. Schools have much more backing from the branch (see above as one example)
There are some very good players and coaches at clubs and also some excellent facilities. The major problem is, that apart from the cream of the players who turn pro or get offered money to play U20s at Lansdowne / Mary's etc. most (80%) do not play rugby after schools. So many of the poor sods live off the glory of a couple of games for the rest of their lives. Retention in clubs is improving all the time, especially with good structures at u20S.
The better players at club also have good opportunities to progress throught representative structures over the last few years.
GOOD LUCK TO THEM ALL - CLUBS & SCHOOLS. But the IRFU needs to look after clubs better and address the poor retention of schools players FOR THE FUTURE OF THE IRISH TEAM.

Well explained.

Another major problem is the scheduling for clubs.

For example, the team I'm involved with had 4 league games from September to December and our next competitive game is in February in the Cup.

That is useless in terms of developing players.

Was rugby better in the days when players wore proper rugby jersyes? Why has rugby gone down the route of shoulder pads, tight colourless shirts with tasteless designs on them, hats for the backs, and gloves. Does it make for a better sport?
