how many players on each team would have played rep rugby, is it unusual to have a player in the starting team who didnt play rep rugby? Do 2nds teams not kinda of get the run around as their 1st will get all the resources?

It changes from year to year. There are guys on all these A teams who have not played rep rugby, but there are also guys on some of these B teams who have played rep rugby so it doesn't work like that...some reasonably ordinary players have managed to make it onto leinster/ulster/connacht/munster schools teams and they won't be guaranteed a place on teams like trinity at u20 level. On the other hand, some guys will turn up who have never come near playing rep rugby, work their socks off on the pitch and in the gym, and end up making the team.

The starting team wouldn't generally be decided on these teams by september so don't worry about never getting a shot. If for the sake of argument you were training your heart out and playing well for the Bs, you're likely to get opportunities for the As.

Can't speak for every club on resources - obviously the As would get more resources on match day, but other than that there shouldn't be a huge difference as everyone trains together aside from the team runs.

A good move would be to get in touch with the relevant people at the clubs that interest you (see their websites) - get in touch and whichever you get the best feel from you should play for. Earlier comment about proximity to work was also very valid.

If you are at all interested in coming to barnhall then we would be more than happy to have you. We might not be able to challenge the very top teams but we should have a very respectable season. We'll have 7 former Leinster youths in our squad and I think one former Munster youth aswell. Especially if you play in the backline then you sound like you would fit in perfectly. And being a Munster man maybe you would prefer Barnhall to the south Dublin clubs ;)

dont be duped into barnhall or seapoint... have a look where they are on a map before even thinking about it!! There are lots of clubs in the south dublin area that are far more accessible and will be able to accommodate you

correct... wanderers, lansdowne, old belvo, monkstown(sydney parade)- who will have a ' fun ' 20s social team next year, bective, old wesley are all within 5 minutes of each other and are all a 10minute drive from the city centre.... keep in mind, due to construction at lansdowne road, lansdowne have a ground share with old wesley also based in dublin 4 ... these 2 teams often train and play in kilternan which is up the dublin mountains and far from the city centre

You should forget about playing under 20's, with a load of skinny, fake-tan wearing, bleached hair D4 Nancyboys. - You would learn far more playing at the junior levels of a club with history and tradition (somewhere like Monkstown) where you will be playing with, and against players with strength, power and experience.

Like you would know, numpty

Look at the rugby grounds there - if they were to be sold, we could raise 100 million no bother. Thats nearly as much as I have in my back account, ie - quite a bit of cash.

Sure beats the €11 an hour you get paid, eh?

i do know a fair bit about whats going on in monkstown and how they're desperately looking for players because everybody else is joining the local alternatives like belvo, wfc.... the merger with lansdowne didn't go well :D

and don't worry, i get paid more than 11 euro an hour

lansdowne had a u20b team three or four years ago, coaches thought it interfered with u20firsts set up so scrapped it. id play for whatever club is closest to where you will be living and see what sides in area have two sides, nothing worse than clicking your heels on sideline for a season! where are you going to be living in dublin?

This is an absolutely terrible post. CC, steer well clear of Monkstown and do play 20s (where skills will develop and you will have a laugh with lads your own age rather than playing ten-man rugby with guys 10 years and 25% of body fat your senior).

'Strength, power and experience'? The u20s at Lansdowne, Trinity, UCD and Blackrock would put 50 points on Monkstown's 1st XV. Sorry but it's true.

As for 'history and tradition'. Monkstown has infinitely inferior amounts of this compared to almost every other club that has been mentioned on this thread.

What absolute rubbish, any decent J1 side would put 40/50 points on any u20 side, they would quite simply get hammered up front.

You might think so, but half of Trinity's 1st XV pack last season were u20s as well and the 1st XV pack coped in AIL Div 2. They'd gain parity up front and absolutely destroy them in the backs. We're talking about quality young players here who are pretty much fully physically developed (they're all turning up from school able to bench rediculous amounts these days).

This debate about if an u20's team would beat a mid table j1 team is ridiculous....

Any J1 side would comfortably beat any 20's side.... i say this having played both 20's (against the like of rock and lansdowne) and J1's....

the physicality of J1's is significantly higher than 20's...

As for the backs iv found a few of the old heads completely out play the younger lads simply down to fact that they have vast experience...

as for the original post regarding who to play for??? I would suggest Marys in Templeogue.... great facilities and new 20's coaches... most of the senior cup final squad 08 are joining and is a great social club...after 20's i would suggest playin for a J1's side to get a bit of experience... hope thats of some use.

When you say "J1s" I presume you're referring to sides like Monkstown, Newbridge, Tullows' 1st XVs? I'm not talking about 2nd XVs (also "J1s") for top Leinster clubs. I have also played for and against both and stand by my argument.
