Desperate....................horrible to happen to anyone................for someone who competed at such a high level in sport....a true tragedy. I hope he's given the privacy to spend the rest of his days with as much dignity as possible in the circumstances.

Touche.

However, there are those that may prefer six months rather than facing into a certain 3-5 years life sentence that would serves as a progressive time bomb.

I can't imagine going through anything so horrible. Utterly horrendous for him and his family.
The sport that unites Catholic, Protestant and dissenter has had its day of days. Pity anybody who can't enjoy it. Some day.

MND is horrific. You wouldn't wish it on your worst enemy.

Indeed....it brought up some very emotive comments from a couple of pals when i posted this story elsewhere......it appears it's a truly horrific degenerative condition.

As a former scrum-half who began watching/playing rugby as a kid around the time of 1995 RWC, JVDW was always a hero. I was always very intrigued by that Saffer winning team in '95, and JVDW was the main guy I wanted to follow. I was lucky to get his autograph when I stood behind the old West Stand with the other schoolboys as Saffers won in Dublin 98 and 2000. A great, great rugby player. A hero to many. I wish him all the best!
